The Beginning: A “Network of Networks” In 1969, when the Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense began connecting computers at different universities The resulting network was called APRANET Goal: create a large network with multiple path – in the form of telephone lines – that could survive a nuclear attack or other disaster In the mid 1980s, NSF (National Science Foundation) joined the project after the Defense Department dropped its funding. The Internet- then and now

ARPA’s Network

However, the existing network could not handle the load NSF created a new, higher capacity network, called NSFNet The link between ARPANET, NSFnet, and other networks was called the Internet The process of connecting separate network is called internetworking Thus, Internet – a worldwide network of networks – gets its name The Internet- then and now

NSFnet only for academic research, not allow users to conduct private business Several private telecommunications companies built their own network backbone that functioned in much the same manner as NSFnet Like a tree’s trunk, a network backbone is the central structure that connects other elements of the network The Internet- then and now

Backones- high speed data lines

The original ARPANET was shut down in 1990, and government funding for NEFnet was discontinued in 1995. But the commercial Internet backbone services have easily replaced them Today, the Internet is still growing The Internet- then and now

The number of internet users is Expected to continue
