2 2 WHO SHOULD DO THIS COURSE? This course is for you if: You are completely new to computers you have a computer at home but are afraid to use it You want to learn about the web and email

3 3 WHAT DO YOU NEED TO START THE COURSE? Be able to understand verbal instructions and explanations Be able to follow simple written instructions and diagrams Be able to attend regular sessions

4 4 HOW IS THE COURSE STRUCTURED? The course is broken in to 3 units covering different aspects of web, email and document presentation. To gain a full course certificate you must complete all 3 units Units can be studied in any order but usually you will follow a standard course

5 5 Entry level 1 Foundation Work (optional) Learn about the basic mouse techniques Learn about the most important parts of the keyboard Become competent at entering information in to a computer system Gain some understanding of how computer systems work

6 6 UNIT 1 - EMAIL Send e-mail messages Recieve e-mail messages Set up your own email account Send attachments Use contacts book

7 7 UNIT 2 – WEB How to search for information on: Job websites Government websites General information Education websites Online shopping

8 8 Unit 3 – Create work for Display Learn how to create: Posters Designs Letters Presentations Learn to use: Word Processor Desktop Publishing Software Presentation Software

9 9 WHAT ENVIRONMENT WILL I BE LEARNING IN? Learning is individualised Each student will complete a learning plan to outline learning aims You can learn at your own speed You can suggest things you are interested in and they can be incorporated in to your learning

10 10 HOW WILL I LEARN? Following guides and practical exercises Tutor demonstrations and explanations Studying information in provided books and resources

11 11 HOW LONG IS THE COURSE? No fixed time to complete course or units Varies according to student prior learning, attendance and motivation Examination Board Recommendation: 3 units in 60 hours of guided learning (30 sessions)

12 12 DO I HAVE TO DO EXAMS? To complete a unit; students must show they can complete set tasks competently Involves completing practical tasks using the IT skills you have learned. The task is not an exam. The tasks can be taken anytime during the course.

13 13 What if I make mistakes? The tasks are not an exam - you are allowed to attempt tasks as many times as needed You may complete several tasks and pick the one you think is best

14 14 ATTENDANCE AND BOOKING Allowed to book up to 5 computer sessions per week*** Sessions are 2 hours each Starting at 10am, 12pm, 2pm 2 extra sessions on Monday evenings at 4pm and 6pm Recommended minimum attendance of 2 sessions per week ***5 session are available If unemployed and looking for work. 2 sessions only if not unemployed and looking for work.

15 15 Booking and Cancellation Sessions are booked using the computer booking sheets (find on the desk) If you are unable to attend telephone us in advance so your seat can be taken by another student. You do not need to give a reason why you can’t attend Telephone: 01902 353705

16 16 LATENESS Please let us know if you think you will be more than 15 minutes late for a booked session Any seats that are left unclaimed by 10 mins after the session start are made available to students who wish to extend their session or to clients who want to make use of the IT facilities for jobsearch.
