Lesson Objectives: to be able to able to describe and explain land use changes to understand what effect these changes can have on people Last lesson you should have learnt about the different land use zones. But many of these patterns are changing. This is because the functions of some cities are changing.

Some functions of cites: - Retail function – a main shopping centre in the area e.g. Preston Industrial town or city – where manufacturing is the main employer e.g. Sheffield Ports – vital to international trade e.g. Bristol Cultural Centres and University towns e.g. Oxford Resorts/holiday centres e.g. Bournemouth Administrative centres – centres of local government e.g. Liverpool is the administrative centre of Merseyside.

New luxury housing and flats Outer suburbs are growing Out of town shopping centres New industrial areas on the edge of cities New residential areas on the edge of cities The city generally getting bigger

Look at the two pictures A and D - If you look carefully the pictures on the worksheet can be found on these pictures - You need to draw what the features would have looked like in the opposite picture
