5 Grainger County Even Start The site coordinator works with students on developmental skills in the family literacy program. Even Start serves children from birth to school age. To participate, both the parent and child must attend the educational program. The $75,000/year grant is in its 9 th year and has served over 100 families.

6 Grainger County Adult Education Grainger County Adult Education served over 215 adults. To the right, adult education teacher Vickie Vineyard, works with several 17 year olds who have dropped out of high school.

7 Appalachian Technical Education Center (ATEC) The ATEC lab, located in the Family Resource Center, trained all ages in computer skills. More participants were served in this lab than any other ATEC lab in the region. Also, Adult Education students and high school students needing an additional credit to graduate utilized the lab.

8 Workforce Investment Act (WIA) WIA served 97 students during 2002- 2003 88 participants are working this year 31 worksites use these student workers

9 21 st Century Community Learning Center Grant After-school enrichment and educational programs 1,167 students participated during 2001-2002 1,295 students participated during 2002-2003 100 volunteers Enrichment programs include piano, guitar, gymnastics, photography, computers, art, karate, jazz, landscaping, etc.

10 Reading Excellence Act Joppa Elementary School & Washburn School $600,000 Grant for 2 years Before- and After-school tutoring Professional Library for teachers 10 days Professional Development Balanced Literacy Breakthrough To Literacy Program Four new computers in every K-3 classroom at Joppa School Over 100 computers purchased with grant funds

11 JumpStart Kindergarten & KinderCamp 80% of Joppa and Washburn pre-Kindergarten students participated KinderCamp was held at all elementary schools during the summer prior to Kindergarten

12 Tutorial Assistance (TA) Grant 3 Elementary Schools received grants in excess of $900,000 over a two year period. Debbie Hopson instructs first grade students using Early Success, a Houghton-Mifflin reading intervention program, as part of the TA program.

13 TA Grant  Before- and after-school tutoring  Fast ForWord Basics program  Provided transportation for KinderCamp and other summer programs  Tutoring for Terra Nova preparation

14 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) ParaPro testing For all schools in Grainger County, teaching assistants were prepared for the ParaPro test (as required by NCLB). 56 of 59 passed the exam on the first try. Grainger County provided a “testing center” in the Learning Center. Assistants meeting the new standard were rewarded with a $2,000 annual pay increase.

15 Consolidated School Reform (CSR) Grant 3 year partnership with Co-nect 20 days of on-site visits Joppa and Washburn to receive $600,000 in grant funds

16 Bridges Lab While doing physical activities, students work on concentration skills.

17 Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) Partnership with TVA 7 students placed in TVA’s CADNet Program Most students go to post- secondary and major in Engineering or Engineering Design and test out of beginning CAD courses

18 High School Programs 39 students received Dual Credit with WSCC Education Edge 8 students attended technical school while in high school High Schools that Work
