New section slide HOLBEACH PRIMARY SCHOOL Proposal to expand to 3 forms of entry

Purpose of meeting The aim of this meeting is to… explain why the Council is making this proposal discuss what it will mean for the school listen to your views answer your questions

What is this all about? Lewisham’s population is growing and is expected to continue to grow More people are choosing Lewisham schools As a result we need more school places Demand locally is high and the pace of housing developments mean that we will need more places in the area

What has the council done about this? We added permanent places at 7 schools in 2012/13 and at 3 schools in 2013/14 We have added a primary phase to Trinity CE We have opened 80 “bulge” classes since 2008 (including 2 at Holbeach) Next year we will open new provision at Prendergast Ladywell Fields, Rushey Green and John Stainer ………..But even so we will need more places

Local demand Births to families resident in the area have increased by 35% over the last 10 years In the last 2 years there have been 1,260 births per year We have 846 school places per year in the area - we expect to need over 900 by 2015

Why Holbeach? We have a duty to educate children in the area Holbeach is a popular school It achieves high standards We have looked at ways of developing the school building and have established that the necessary numbers of classrooms can be provided

Alternative colour option The main building would be re-modelled internally, to provide sufficient classrooms -all of a good size. The old toilets and stores at the Bradgate Rd end of the site would be demolished to provide a new kitchen and multipurpose hall Children will use laptops in their classrooms rather than an IT suite The Nursery will need to be provided off-site What would change?

Alternative colour option Classroom size would be improved Hall space will be increased Children will use laptops in their classrooms rather than an IT suite There may need to be changes to playground management but this will be for the school to decide What would this mean for pupils?

Alternative colour option Nursery – the new Barrett’s development will include a nursery for the school, but we may need to find a short term solution Playground – the site proposals include the use of the roof of the new hall facility and we will look at the landscaping of the playground. Sport facilities The school has started to use some of the facilities at St Dunstan’s Jubilee fields and will investigate the use of the Ladywell Arena Challenges

Alternative colour option Will standards be affected? The standards in Lewisham’s primary schools are high despite the turbulence of the last few years as numbers have increased. We will work with the school to ensure that standards are maintained. Will the headteacher be supported? We can provide funding to the school for additional management support during the transition to 3 forms of entry. Changes to the school

Alternative colour option If the scheme goes ahead and the school admits 90 pupils from 2015, we will receive additional funding from the government to deliver the building programme including furniture and equipment. The running expenses of the school are funded on the basis of pupil numbers. As the school numbers grow its budget grows. How will this be funded?

alternative colour option Please send your comments and questions to me. I will also be talking to the school council, to staff and to the school governing body. All your comments will be reported back to the Mayor in a report in early December. Meanwhile we will continue to work on refining the planning application. What happens next?

alternative colour option If the Mayor agrees to the scheme going ahead, a Statutory Notice will be published which gives another opportunity to comment. The Mayor will make his final decision in the spring after these 2 phases of consultation. If he agrees, we would need to start work on the building by next summer. And then?
