I. Background 2 Teaching Sustainability in B-Schools New Age, New Rule, and New Paradigm: Understanding Self-Actualization of Management Education in the Age of Transcendence Sustainability encompasses a host of new demands and opportunities for virtually all industries, especially that of management education. The growth in importance and awareness of interconnected issues among key stakeholders of business schools (e.g., business, government, NGOs, etc.) Sustainability is rising in strategic relevance for management educators in pursuit of competitive advantage. Ultimately emerging importance of sustainability in business reflects self-actualization of capitalism and business schools. Active participation in UN PRME Strategic planning for and implementation of sustainability management education in KHU School of Management The Three pillars of KHU Model for SME: ①Teaching: curriculum expansion ②Research: commitment and resource allocation in related research ③Green Management: awareness in greening of its own school’s management To take leadership in sustainability management education among Business schools. Active participation in UN PRME Strategic planning for and implementation of sustainability management education in KHU School of Management The Three pillars of KHU Model for SME: ①Teaching: curriculum expansion ②Research: commitment and resource allocation in related research ③Green Management: awareness in greening of its own school’s management

Global Compact’s principles to commit business schools to advancing responsibility and sustainability in their education, research and related outreach functions. (The Six PRME Principles) - An initiative of UNGC to inspire and champion responsible management education, research and thought leadership globally - PRME is characterized as the academic side of the UNGC - Jointly sponsored by AACSB International, Aspen Institute, European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI), and Net Impact More than 230 schools worldwide have signed the PRME (including 4 Korean Member B-schools U.N. Global Compact’s principles to commit business schools to advancing responsibility and sustainability in their education, research and related outreach functions. Peace through Commerce PRME (2) 5 The Ten Principles of UN Global Compact Human Rights Principle 1 Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights within their sphere of influence Principle 2Make sure that they are not complicit in human right abuses Labor Rights Principle 3 Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining Principle 4The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor Principle 5The effective abolition of child labor Principle 6Elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation Environment Sustainability Principle 7Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges Principle 8Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility Principle 9Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies Anti- Corruption Principle 10Business should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery

Peace through Commerce 6 The Six Principles of UN PRME Principle 1Purpose We will develop the capabilities of students to be future generators of sustainable value for business and society at large and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy Principle 2Value We will incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the United Nations Global Compact Principle 3Method We will create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership Principle 4Research We will engage in conceptual and empirical research that advances our understanding about the role, dynamics, and impact of corporations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value Principle 5Partnership We will interact with managers of business corporations to extend our knowledge of their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges Principle 6Dialogue We will facilitate and support dialog and debate among educators, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organizations and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability PRME (3)

Active communications with all stakeholders in the course of SME initiative processes. Incorporates voice from constituents of the School (i.e., faculty, staff, students, and alumni) Establishment of Committee for SME chaired by Dean of KHU School of Management with nine-faculty committee members. Establishment of Institute for Peace through Commerce to attract faculty and other sustainability resources, to conduct related research projects and consultation in more organized manner, and which could also be available to advance sustainability curriculum development and other extra-curricular activities Ensure that entire SME initiative to be more than ad hoc. Peace through Commerce KHU – PRME Collaborative 14 Special Session on PRME: Asian Perspective The World Civic Forum, May 2009, Seoul The first successful PRME conference in Asia Arranged in responding to a call for PRME initiatives at the 1st Global Forum for PRME (New York, December 2008) The primary purpose is to share and join the UN PRME among Asian business schools More than 100 scholars and specialists from international organizations, corporations, education and research institutes, and about 200 students from Kyung Hee Unviersity School of Management attended this one-day special session. In concluding the session, participants made consensus in announcing the Seoul Action Plan in order to advocate and promote the vision of Principles for Responsible Management Education among Asian business schools.
