3 Managing The Script Also called: The Prompt Book ▪When you receive your script, copy or paste it to an 8.5X11 format, leaving spaces around it for note-taking.

4 Managing The Script Additional Notes in The Prompt Book ▪Have separate pages for the following ▸ Cast list with contact information ▸ Props used in each scene, where they will be placed on stage. ▸ Costume list for each character in each scene. ▸ Set design with overhead view of set piece placement for each scene (if different in any scene) ▸ Lighting plot (where lights are needed) ▸ Light Cue Sheet (when to turn on what lights)

5 The Prompt Book Con’t ▸ Sound Cue Sheet (when to turn on what sounds) ▸ Calendar –Dates and times of rehearsals. –All dress and tech rehearsals, all performances.

6 The Prompt Book Script Notations ▪IN PENCIL write in blocking (stage movement) notes on the right side of the script. ▸ Use straight lines and arrows to indicate exactly where the mvt takes place. ▪Write in technical cues (light and sound) on the left side of the script.

By D. Sherwood Act One Scene One Scene opens in a richly furnished 1920's parlour. Prof. Plum and Miss Scarlet are discussing the guest list for tonight’s dinner. Scarlet:It’s rediculously dark in here. Plum:I like the dark. I just don’t like the quiet. Scarlet: I can’t imagine who’d come to such dark, and noisy place for dinner. Plum:You can never tell who might show up. I invited quite an unpredictable lot of eccentics - all your friends An explosion is heard outside (OSR) and both run to the window. As the lights and radio go out, Plum screams and covers his ears with his hands. He jumps into Scarlet’s arms. The lights and radio come back on. Scarlet: (dropping Plum to the floor) What are you thinking, Plum? Plum: (Sheepishly getting up and brushing imself off) I was wondering who else might be dropping in? Scarlet: Other than you?

8 Managing The Stage You are the Communicator ▪You are the liason between actors and the director. ▸ You follow the script and correct blocking. ▸ You communicate to the tech team. –Give them their light and sound cue sheet. –Make sure their equipment works. –Have headsets ready with fresh batteries. –Make sure backstage lights work. (Your tech team may do any or all of this but make sure it is done.) ▸ You Call the show

9 Managing The Stage You are the heart of the ensemble ▪You encourage your actors and crew ▪You facilitate your tech team ▪You bring your director/teacher snacks ▪You always have spare pencils w erasers ▪You stroke the F.O.H. and theatre manager ▪You make sure everything is clean when the ensemble enters the theatre.

10 Managing The Stage You delegate within your crew Delegate but make sure it is done! ▪Props (must be clean, fixed, put in specific places; dishes washed and containers re-filled before the performance.) ▪Costumes must be clean, fixed, hung up. ▪Stage floor must be swept. ▪Curtains drawn. ▪Set placed before or put away after rehearsals or performances. ▪Tech equipment/headsets turned off and put away. ▪Backstage areas clean and swept (garbage gone)

11 Managing The Stage Calling The Show ▪Give 30min, 15min, 5min and places calls to the actors, crew and tech. ▪F.O.H. will communicate when you may start the show. ▪Call opening sequence of the show. ▸ Actors ready ▸ Tech cues for opening sequence ▪Call all cues according to your script. ▪Call closing sequence.

12 Managing The Stage Closing The Show ▪Make sure the theatre company manager has your copy of the prompt book. ▪All delegates for clean-up are performing their duties. ▪Costumes and props are put away clean, fixed, and in their proper spots. ▪Anything broken or missing is reported. ▪Everyone has been thanked. (Yours is a thankless job -sorry -you get the big bucks.)

13 Blocking Notations Tell ‘em where to go and how to do it. ▪Write all entries in pencil. ▪ Arrows indicate direction ➡➚➘✕↵ ▪Use SR, USR, CS etc for where to end up. ▪Use character name only when necessary. ▪Be brief but clear.
