6 TACE Center: Region IV, a project of the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University Funded by RSA Grant # H264A080021. © Marc Gold & Associates Employment for All 6 Typical summer days for teens without disabilities… Household chores (including housework, gardening, caring for younger siblings, meal preparation, etc.) Jobs (newspaper routes, washing cars, waiting tables, pumping gas, etc.) Hanging out with friends (swimming, dating, going to carnivals and fairs, etc.) Relaxing (reading, doing a hobby, learning something new, etc.) Dreaming about the future and taking steps to get there (e.g., visiting colleges and filling out applications, volunteering for a charity, etc.)

9 TACE Center: Region IV, a project of the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University Funded by RSA Grant # H264A080021. © Marc Gold & Associates Employment for All 9 Research Shows Meaningful work experiences while in school increase the chances of post-school success Work experiences offer the chance to gain skills, make connections, get engaged in the community, learn what support strategies work, and make better-informed choices about the future Youth with severe disabilities often aren’t being provided access to meaningful work experiences while in school (Johnson, Stodden, Emanuel, Luecking, & Mack, 2002; Rusch & Braddock, 2004; Carter, Ditchman, Sun, Trainor, Swedeen, & Owens, 2010 )

Spring work experiences and teacher expectations for summer work are positive predictors of summer employment outcomes…a summer job can be included as part of the transition individualized education program (IEP). (Carter, Ditchman, Sun, Trainor, Swedeen, & Owens, 2010)

No! Research shows that youth who are employed during the summer actually participate in a greater number of different activities than youth who are not employed. (Carter, Ditchman, Sun, Trainor, Swedeen, & Owens, 2010)
