3 The Dance Competition Is next Week Your dance competition is next weekend, but you don’t know what to do and you are freaking out! Have no fear this book will teach you everything you need too know from preparing to makeup. By the end of this book you will be a pro on dance competitions!

4 Competitions There are many dance competitions. Their is nationals, regional's, and convention. Convention can be at nationals, or regional's, its never convention by itself. Competitions are usually three days long, starting on Friday and ending on Sunday. Nationals are almost always over the summer. At competitions divisions are divided into age, type of dance, and experience. There are usually three levels of dance experience. Awards usually start at bronze and go up to platinum or titanium. There are also overall awards which are for your whole age category. Be prepared for anything that could go wrong. Your music might mess up or a costume piece might fall out, but just keep dancing. Arrive at the competition at least a half hour early, or your call time because almost always the competition runs early. And also already have you makeup done. At convention dress in something that will stand out. That way the teacher will notice you, and you will have a better chance of getting a scholarship.

5 Training Most competitive dancers start out with regular dance and when they are older start competitive dance. When training for dance competitions go to all extra practices and try to attend technique practices as often as possible. Try on all your costumes to make sure they fit and double check all your materials to make sure you have all hair and costume pieces.

6 Materials Makeup: stage makeup has to be SUPER big. Because there are really bright lights on you, and people in the back row in the audience in the back row need to be able to see your makeup. Hair: Your hairstyle has to be really tight so it wont fall out throughout the day. Also, their can be no fly away hairs (to fix that use gel and or hairspray). Costume/ jewelry: Two days before the competition check to make sure you have all your costume, hair, and jewelry pieces. Shoes: Get any shoes you need for your dances. If you already have dance shoes than your good to go, unless they are dirty then clean them with a wet wipe. Tip: Practice your assigned hair and makeup before you go to the competition so you know how to do it. If you have no idea how to do the hair or makeup, go to a hair salon or makeup store and show them a picture or describe the look and they can show you how to do it.

8 A day in the life 7:15am- wake up ( do morning routine) 7:45am- start hair and makeup 8:30am- put costume and studio clothes on over (jacket, sweatpants) 8:40am- get snacks 8:45am- leave 9:15am- get their at call time 9:30am- stretch 9:45am- practice 10:00am-12:30pm- dance/help others/ watch dances 1:00pm- eat lunch 2:00pm- dance more watch dances 6:00pm- eat dinner 7:00pm-8:30pm- awards

10 Glossary Call Time- the time you have to be at the competition Convention- an event where there are multiple dance classes and guest teachers Scholarship- usually a chance to go to the convention again for free Tap- a fast moving dance with sounds Ballet- the base of dance Pointe- ballet with special shoes Jazz- Technical dance Hip Hop- Fast hard hitting dance Acro- acrobatics and gymnastics Contemporary- dance where you put your body in different shapes and tell a story Lyrical- a mix between jazz and ballet while telling a story Musical theatre- theatrical dance Pom- a mix between hard hitting movements and technique Stage makeup- Bright makeup you can see from far away
