6. Motion of the Ocean Tides – done?? 1. What causes them and why can they happen? Gravitational pull of the sun and moon. Water is fluid and flows (fluid dynamics) 2. Compare the equilibrium theory to the dynamic theory of tides. Equilibrium theory is based on a uniform Earth, no continents and no tilt whereas the dynamic theory takes those factors into account to predict tides 3. What kind of tides do we experience during new moon and full moon? Spring tides (largest ones) are formed because the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun are acting together in one direction. When the Sun and Moon are perpendicular to each other and the Earth, the lowest tides are formed, called neap tides.

7. Tides 4. What is the periodicity of tides around the world and why? Tides are diurnal, semidiurnal and mixed This is due to the continents, there shapes and the travel of tides from west to east. 5. What increases the magnitude, speed and height, of tides in estuaries and bays? The bays and estuaries constrict the space within which the tides can travel. Water goes from wide open space to restricted space and the energy does not change so the tide becomes more dynamic and can be seen as tidal waves. 6. What would happen to the Earth’s climate if we had no tides? The water would not mix as well and the warm waters of the tropics would not mix with the ice cold polar waters which would cause the climates to become colder with resulting continental glaciers.
