When Jesus lived in Palestine his homeland wasn’t ruled by his own people, but by the Romans, another country. A huge Roman army had marched into Palestine and conquered it and the people had to serve the Romans and do as they were told.
12
Every family in Palestine had to pay taxes to the Romans and all the money was sent to Rome.
The Romans made local people collect the taxes, these people were called ‘tax collectors’ and they were hated by the people in Palestine.
13
The man they hated most was Zacchaeus because, not only did he collect the taxes for the Romans, but he also overcharged people and made money for himself too.
14
Zacchaeus was shouted at by everybody and no one wanted to be his friend.
15
One day, Jesus visited the town where Zacchaeus lived
One day, Jesus visited the town where Zacchaeus lived. Zacchaeus wanted to go and hear Jesus speak, but he knew he would have to be careful because if people in the crowd saw him they would shout at him.
16
So, he climbed a tree and watched as Jesus spoke to the crowd.
All the people in the town were gathered there and they invited Jesus back to their homes so he could eat and rest.
17
“Come and eat at my house, Jesus” said one.
“Have a rest at mine,” invited another. But Jesus, politely, turned down their invitations and he looked around the crowd.
18
Jesus saw Zacchaeus and called out, “Zacchaeus, Zacchaeus, come down from the tree. I am tired and hungry and I am coming to eat and rest at your house, with you.
19
Zacchaeus was shocked and nearly fell out of the tree!
The crowd was angry and they yelled and shouted, “He is a thief!” “He steals our money!” “Why are you going to eat with him?” “A holy man should eat with honest people!”
20
Jesus and Zacchaeus talked.
After Jesus left the city, Zacchaeus changed. He was so affected by what Jesus did and said to him, that he gave all of his money to the poor.
21
share What do you think Jesus might have said to Zacchaeus?
What do you think Zacchaeus might have been thinking?
22
We all need good friends.
Zacchaeus was a mean, greedy man who took money from people. Until Jesus was kind to him Zacchaeus had no friends and was very lonely. After Jesus showed him how to be friends Zacchaeus became a generous, caring man and he felt much happier.
23
A Time for Reflection We are going to think about how important our friends are to all of us. We are going to think about the things we can do to make friends and to be a good friend. Think about this whilst you listen to this song…
24
What can YOU do if you feel sad because a boy or girl is not your friend?
25
What could YOU do if you knew someone wasn’t making friends and this kept happening, again and again and again and it became bullying?
26
Talk to a teacher or adult in school.
Talk to your Mum or Dad or someone who looks after you at home. Talk to big brothers and sisters or cousins. Make sure you TELL someone. If you want to have friends, be friendly! Sometimes we need some extra help to sort this out! Just like Zacchaeus needed help from Jesus.

School Council Competition Can you help?
Friendship Week School Council Competition Can you help? We would like to help remind everyone to be good friends around school. We want to put up some friendship ‘Super Heroes’ around our school to show what good friends we can be and how to help each other build bridges if we do fall out.
28
How to enter our competition …
Your teacher will give you a competition sheet, during Friendship Week. - Think carefully about your super hero and write your final idea on your sheet. (You might want to label it too with all the qualities of a good friend.) Write your name and class on your sheet. Hand your entry to your School Council rep. or your teacher.
29
Some ideas could be: Captain Kind
Always greets his friends with a smile. Always listens to what his friend’s side of an argument. Always shares his x box and football cards. Has a super laser zapper which beams out the word SORRY if he has done something to hurt one of his friends, to ask for forgiveness.
30
We look forward to seeing your ideas and we will announce the winners after Friendship Week. There will be prizes for the best entries judged by us! Thank you for listening to us today. We hope that the School Council is helping everyone in our school to stay friends. We know everyone in our school is very special and we need to thank God for our friends and for the strength to forgive others when we do fall out.
31
Let us pray.
