1 Simeon’s song Luke 2:21-35

2 Luke 2:21-24 8th day: naming ceremony 40th day: “child dedication”

3 Luke 2:25-28 Assumption: Simeon was both old and a priest. Simeon was a righteous man who was waiting for the “consolation” of Israel. The Holy Spirit’s message: “You will not die before you see the Messiah.”

4 Simeon’s song Luke 2:29-32 29Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, You now dismiss your servant in peace. 30For my eyes have seen Your salvation, 31which You have prepared in the sight of all people, 32a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to Your people Israel.

5 Luke 2:33-35 33The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about Him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

6 The manger…and the cross.
Simeon’s song was not just, Away In The Manger. It was also, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.

7 Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the sky looked down where he lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay.

8 When I survey the wondrous cross,
on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.

9 See, from His head, His hands, His feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down. did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

10 Were the whole realm of nature mine that were a present far too small; love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

11 Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care, and take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.
