To develop a new state school report card that aligns with our NCLB waiver (report card condition of waiver) Who’s on it? 17-person committee selected by the Governor’s office & the Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction Represents key stakeholders  Parents  Teachers  Administrators  School board members  Community partners Co-chairs:  Tony Hopson, Sr., Founder, President/CEO, Self-Enhancement, Inc.  Sandy Husk, Superintendent, Salem-Keizer School District

5 What’s the Committee’s main charge? To create a ‘best in class’ report card Ideally, the report card will… Be clear & easily understood Consist of common metrics that define excellence Reinforce the Achievement Compacts and other, related initiatives for continuous improvement Drive high-level strategy Facilitate public accountability Show progress toward excellence Evolve over time as a living document 4

8 Phase 1: Pre-design evaluation Conducted in October 2012 12 focus groups across Portland & Salem  4 among parents, including 1 Spanish-language group and 1 among parents of color  3 among teachers  4 among administrators  1 among students 8 – 10 participants in each 90 minute group Participants evaluated the existing report card, an Illinois alternative and more than three dozen discrete report card elements Results informed the content and design of the prototypes developed for the next phase 7 12 Focus Groups (8-10 participants) Parents Teachers Admins Students

9 Phase 2: Prototype evaluation Conducted in January 2013 Statewide Web survey  Targeted sample of parents, plus ad hoc sample of parents, teachers, administrators, students and other stakeholders  Promoted via Facebook, Oregonlive.com and websites associated with local newspapers around the state  1,400+ completes Participants evaluated the existing report card and one of two prototypes 8 Statewide Web Survey Targeted Sample Parents Ad hoc sample ParentsTeachers Admin Students Other
