CAL DQM SHIFT TODO and RELATED MATERIAL T. Schörner-Sadenius Hamburg University CAL Meeting, 13 October 2004
2
CAL Meeting 13/10/20042 KEEP IN MIND UCAL is (together with CTD) the most important ZEUS detector component. We therefore have great responsibility. With an ageing system we have to give our best to contribute to the success of HERA 2.

CAL Meeting 13/10/20043 TODO SHIFT PERSON We want to calibrate as often as possible! Morning: Read elog book entries. Anything unusual during the night? Magnets off? In doubt call TSS. Phone shift crew to find out about HERA plans. We need bad channel update every day. ADC2VOLT and FEC at least once a week. Check last night’s DQMCOC histos on the web presenter. Check ping page. Daily: Take check-out runs using auto_checkout.sh. Bad channel update using auto_badchannel.sh. Uno scale factors using unocomp and updateUno. Take an SRTDFLT checkout run. Stay tuned to HERA conditions (RCO viewer): calibration possibilities? Check for new zmon runs you could look at. Evening: Check DQMCOC histograms for the runs of the day. Check ping page. } Mail to TSS: Significant news?

CAL Meeting 13/10/20044 TODO SHIFT PERSON We want to calibrate as often as possible! Every week (at least): Do an auto_adc2volt.sh. Do a full calibration using auto_fec.sh or auto_run.sh fast. Do a trimming (using `trimming’ in caw on teucer). Attend the components’ meeting on Monday at 11. Give your weekly shift report in the CAL Wednesday meetings. Please bring always a bit more than just naked numbers – we should try to make this an opportunity for education! After an access / after magnets off: After an access or after the magnets were off we need a full calibration (after an access including DU offsets and time offsets)! Especially the DU offsets with the required access to the HV and the complete lowering of the HV of all modules is critical. Therefore after an access either TSS or Cathy should always be contacted to be around for the calibration! } Mail to TSS: Significant news?

CAL Meeting 13/10/20045 TODO SHIFT PERSON We want to calibrate as often as possible! Always: Carry the mobile phone and answer to calls immediately. Inform TSS if problems / questions. Read web pages and keep yourself and your colleagues informed of what is going on: CAL generals HERA and ZEUS status. Tell TSS if non-trivial problems; we will put them on our SOS-CAL page. Log your actions in our web tool (until we have better means) and, if relevant for ZEUS, in the electronic log book.
6
CAL Meeting 13/10/20046 MAIN ALARMS Getting called by the shift crew. Slow control tells `Server Alarm’ for one or more CAL parts. Action: Reset OS9 hc3control on 6 th floor (should be done by shift crew; map on ping page!) Slow controls tells about HV alarms For rucksack crates: Try to power-cycle the crate (switch to `local’, `power on’, `remote’). For F/B/RCAL power supplies: Try to locate problem (crate number etc.), and if non- trivial call TSS, Cathy, Wladimir. `Handshake’ problems between CAL and EVB/TLT during setup/activate of ZEUS run Action: restart the readout. If this does not work: Is the OS9 hc3control up? HV failures from the rucksack on SC? Consider server restart! SMS on expert mobile: `Please check BCAL HV’: During data taking: Check HIP histograms for dead modules. No data taking: take UNO run to identify dead module. In communication with shift leader switch back on using CAW. Computer failures on ping page Action: Try to following instructions on ping page; many machines can simply be rebooted (at least all os9).
7
CAL Meeting 13/10/20047 USE SCRIPTS WHERE POSSIBLE ! Reduction of error sources! A number of scripts for certain calibration purposes: auto_badchannel.sh: takes UNO, QINJ, PED run with actual calibration version. auto_fec.sh: Full electronics calibration with or without DU offsets; includes two bad channel updates. auto_adc2volt.sh: bad channel update, adv2volt update, bad channel update auto_adc2volt_part2.sh: adc2volt update, bad channel update auto_checkout.sh: UNO, QINJ, PED with dummy constants (calibration version 0). auto_run.sh: to run any kind of special (local) CAL run or full calibrations. If standard scripts fail: Think first! Call more experienced person and discuss! Only then take manual action!
8
CAL Meeting 13/10/20048 USE SCRIPTS WHERE POSSIBLE ! Reduction of error sources! Read output of scripts carefully: Does the information given make sense? Calibration numbers etc.? Any message that looks like an error message (careful! It takes some experience to know which `error’ messages are to be taken seriously)? Did you execute all necessary newcalconv, change_version and change_version_main commands? Did you log your action in the ZEUS elog book? In our web tool? After your action, did you give control back to ZEUS? If in doubt: Think first! Call more experienced person and discuss! Only then take action!
9
CAL Meeting 13/10/20049 IMPORTANT COMMANDS Getting ready for data taking etc. In order to facilitate data taking for ZEUS: Is the readout with ZEUS? show_readout If readout not with ZEUS (cal_rc): kill_readout –f where appropriate, and start_readout ZEUS for cal_rc on teucer. Readout for calibration purposes Readout has to be with cal_user: start_readout DAQ as cal_user. Getting the local run control Only if ZEUS shift leader agrees! As cal_user on teucer: start_RC & (makes sense only with readout with DAQ). Don’t forget to click a few times on the `idle’ field to let RC know where the readout is. Only if really necessary (ask TSS in every single instance): server restart As cal_rc on teucer: kill_server, start_server.
