Matter and Magnets
3
Matter A.Every object that takes up space is made of matter.
4
States of matter A.Matter can exists in different states: solid, liquid, and gas. SolidLiquid Gas Water exists as a solid, liquid and gas.
5
Phase changes A.To change between the different states of matter, solid, liquid, and gas, water goes through phase changes. Solid Liquid Gas Phase changes can be caused by changes in temperature.
6
Water and phase changes video Click on image to play video clip. 1 min. 41 sec.
7
Phase change experiment Click on image to play video clip. 59 sec.
8
Boiling A.When water reaches the boiling point, it changes from a liquid to a gas, commonly called steam.
9
Condensation video clip Plays automatically. 51 sec.
10
Evaporation A.When water evaporates, it changes from liquid water to a gas without boiling. On a sunny day, water will quickly evaporate from this towel on the clothesline, and from the soil of the potted plant.
11
Evaporation as part of a cycle A.When water evaporates, it changes into a gas. Evaporation is part of the water cycle. Water in the ocean evaporates and then forms clouds.
12
Freezing When the temperature reaches the freezing point, water changes from a liquid state to a solid, commonly called ice.
13
Melting When ice melts, it changes from a solid to a liquid.
14
Physical properties remain the same A.Physical properties remain the same as the material is reduced in size. B.As an ice cube melts, it remains the same substance. A piece of paper that is torn in half is still paper.
15
Mass A.Mass is the amount of matter an object holds. B.Air has mass.
16
Matter has mass video Plays automatically. 2 min. 19 sec.
17
Volume A.As a balloon is blown up, the volume of air increases.
18
Physical properties remain the same A.Physical properties remain the same as the material is reduced in size B.When clay is cut into smaller pieces, the properties remain the same.
19
Physical properties remain the same A.When a log is cut into smaller pieces, the properties remain the same.
20
Made of parts A.Materials are composed of parts that are too small to be seen without magnification. B.A vehicle, a plant, a grain of sugar, and a drop of ink are alike because they are all made of smaller parts.
