2 Science, Engineering and Public Policy Six national roundtables, partnered with the Institute for Research on Public Policy Bring together politicians, public servants, NGOs, scientists, engineers from industry and academe to discuss the issue under Chatham House Rule. Will produce an article of the findings for Policy Options Magazine.

3 Topics Not Covered How should government policies help science and engineering How should government policies help high tech companies.

4 Session 1: Understanding the role of scientific evidence and technology in policy-making What is the role of scientific evidence and technology in policy-making? How do governments incorporate scientific evidence and technology in policy formulation, implementation and evaluation?

5 Session 2: Using scientific and technological expertise Internal capacity vs access to outside research and expertise Are advisors limited to providing data and evidence, or does their responsibility extend to making recommendations on the policy options?

6 Session 3: Governance and political challenges What governance processes and enabling conditions are needed to ensure that policy- making is scientifically and technologically credible, while addressing a perceived societal preference for policy processes that are more democratic than technocratic? In an era of 24/7 news and social media, to what extent should government scientists be free to engage the public on their work?

7 Session 4: Advice to governments What are some examples of when scientific & engineering advice to government worked well?
