The Mozambique MRLink Project -Communication Systems Design 2004- Team Members: Arnaldo Cumbe Bhavik Gandhi Atanasia Mapapa Meraldina Mazivele Jakob Ringblom Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) IT-university Stockholm, Sweden

Outline of the presentation 1. Project Background 2. The Main Chosen Solution 3. Sharing the VSAT Bandwidth 4. Summary and Conclusion

1. Project Background

Malaria is a serious, sometimes fatal, disease caused by a parasite; More than 40 % of the people in the world, in over 100 countries and territories, are at risk.

1. Project Background SIDA: The Swedish International Development Agency; MIM: International organization that has been supporting the endemic countries to get free from this disease; MIMCom: Part of the MIM that provides full access to the Internet.

1. Project Background CISM: Centro de Investigação em Saúde da Manhiça – Moçambique (Health Center); Telecenter: Organization that offers Internet services; IMAP: Instituto de Magisterio Primario (Institute of Teachers Formation).

2. The Main Chosen Solution

2.1 Alternative Technologies 2. The Main Chosen Solution

Three different alternative technologies were evaluated to upgrade the Internet connection at the CISM: ISDN Frame Relay VSAT 2. The Main Chosen Solution

The chosen technology to upgrade the connection is VSAT VSAT stands for “Very Small Aperture Terminal” and refers to receive/transmit terminals installed at dispersed sites connecting to a central hub via satellite using small diameter antenna dishes (0.6 to 3.8 meter). We will installed a receive / transmit terminal at the CISM, which will connect to a central hub in the UK, via Satellite.

2. The Main Chosen Solution 2.2 Vendor Selection

2. The Main Chosen Solution 2.2 The Provider of the Technology : GS Telecom  8 Companies evaluated in the selection process  4 of these 8 were located outside Mozambique  Out of the remaining 4, we narrowed vendor selection down to GS Telecom, based on Cost, Service and Reliablity.  GS Telecom, started in 1995, and has a large number of current installations., Most importantly, it porvides 24/7 local support.

 C Band Transmitter Reciever connecting the CISM to a Tier 2 Backbone in the UK via New Skies Satellite NSS7.  On Site, 2.4 meter antenna which will distribute bandwidth to the LAN via a router 2. The Main Chosen Solution 2.2 The Solution

2. The Main Chosen Solution 2.3 Benefits for the CISM of the GS Telecom Solution

2. The Main Chosen Solution 2.3 Benefits for CISM of the GS Telecom Solution - Upgraded bandwidth from 64 kbps to 128 kbps - Own satellite link gives them  More administration control  Better quality bandwidth  Not effectied by bottlenecks at TDM  Cost Effecitve  Supports value added services such as VoIP, Video Confernecing and VPN  Reliable, Scalable and Portable.

3. Sharing the VSAT Bandwidth

The bandwidth of the VSAT terminal will be shared between: CISM Telecenter IMAP In the future other organizations such as: - The bank (BIM) - A Sugar factory

The bandwidth from the CISM will be sheared via an omni-directional antenna located in the telemast in the center of Manhiça 3. Sharing the VSAT Bandwidth

The Telecenter will have a diretional link to the telemast The telemast will have an omni-directional antenna Each site will have a directional antenna air pointed towards the telemast 3. Sharing the VSAT Bandwidth

The equipment in the wireless network: 8 wireless access points from the company SmartBridges based in Singapore 1 outdoor switch 1 external antenna connected to the access point in the telemast Cables and hubs 3. Sharing the VSAT Bandwidth

A test was performed at the KTH main campus: One access point was put on the roof of the S3 building, another on the roof of the mathematics department A link was established between the two access points and a ping message was sent between two laptops connected to them 3. Sharing the VSAT Bandwidth

Sharing and payment model: The Telecentre and the IMAP will be connected to the CISM via an omni- directional antenna in the telemast The Telecentre will be responsible for collecting the money from the IMAP and other organisations that might be connected to the CISM in the future 3. Sharing the VSAT Bandwidth

The future of the network: The access point and the omni-directional antenna in the telemast will facilitate for more organisations to be connected to the CISM’s VSAT terminal in the future Possible other organisations to connect include two banks, a hospital, and a sugar factory in Manhiça 3. Sharing the VSAT Bandwidth

4. Summary and Conclusion

The following has been done in the first phase of the project: The Project plan has been finished An analysis of possible technology to upgrade the Internet connection at the CISM has been done An analysis of possible VSAT vendors for the CISM has been done The wireless network in Manhiça has been designed and most of the equipment for it has been ordered 4. Summary and Conclusion

Evaluation of the first phase: The project has run well, but information was not easy to get about the CISM and Manhiça Some more knowledge within the team about VSAT technology before the initial phase would had been preferable 4. Summary and Conclusion

The Mozambican students’ experiences of the project so far: Memorable Not used for the weather Good environment 4. Summary and Conclusion

The coming part of the project: The team leaves for Mozambique at the 25 th and 26 th of March Activities in Mozambique: – Implement the VSAT terminal at the CISM – Implement the wireless network in Manhiça 4. Summary and Conclusion

Time frame: March 29 th - April 2 nd : Site survey in Manhiça and clearing of equipment at Maputo airport April 5 th - April 16 th : Installation of VSAT terminal at the CISM in Manhiça April 19 th - May 7 th : Implementation of wireless network in Manhiça 4. Summary and Conclusion
