PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES 7 TH GRADE NOTES/LECTURE PGS. 594-596
2
DO NOW TOGETHER… (WITH YOUR LAB GROUP) Imagine you are at a fair/carnival. Describe what you are experiencing with your senses (see, touch, taste, hear and smell.) Check True/False Activity
3
OBJECTIVES Students will… Identify physical and chemical properties of matter Classify objects based on physical properties
4
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES A physical property is a characteristic that you can observe without changing or trying to change the composition of the substance. Examples of physical properties might be how something looks, smells, sounds or tastes. (Use your senses!)
5
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES To describe a sample of matter, you need to identify its state. (solid, liquid, gas). Name some examples of each state of matter. SolidLiquidGas
6
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES FOLDABLE FOR NOTES We will be creating a foldable describing the physical properties of matter. Create foldable according to teacher instructions. Physical Properties fall into 2 categories: Size-Dependent and Size-Independent.
7
SIZE DEPENDENT PROPERTIES Size-Dependent Properties rely on the size of the object. ( 3 properties) 1) Volume: the amount of space in an object 2) Mass: the amount of matter in an object 3) Weight: depends on the mass and the strength of gravity
8
SIZE-INDEPENDENT PROPERTIES Size-Independent Properties DO NOT rely on the size of an object. (7 properties) 1) Density: the amount of mass in a given volume 2) Solubility: amount of a substance that will dissolve another substance 3) Melting point: temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid
9
SIZE-INDEPENDENT PROPERTIES 4) Boiling Point- temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas 5) State of Matter- whether a substance is a solid, a liquid or a gas. 6) Magnetic Properties: can or cannot attract a magnet 7) Color: wavelength of light reflected
10
TO REVIEW Properties of Matter Properties of Matter For Next Time… Test signed by tomorrow Bring in one or two objects from home that can be used to describe physical properties of matter Examples: a book, toy, figurine, food wrapper etc…

12
DO NOW… Describe the physical properties of a baseball. (Hint: state, shape, texture, color, mass etc…) Properties of Matter
13
OBJECTIVES Students will… Identify physical properties of certain substances Explore chemical properties of matter Describe physical properties of known everyday objects

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Chemical Properties are characteristics that cannot be observed without alternating or changing the substance. It is the ability of a substance to undergo a change the alters its identity.

FOR REVIEW Physical vs. Chemical Properties Physical vs. Chemical Properties For Next Time… Each lab group needs to bring in for lab on Monday: egg, piece of fruit, a vegetable, baggie of dry cereal and a slice of bread. (divide up among members!)
