Chapter 2.2 – Properties of Matter properties can be divided into 2 categories 1.physical property – characteristics that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance ex. shape, mass, color, volume, texture, odor, strength, hardness, magnetism, conductivity
2
Chapter 2.2 – Properties of Matter other physical properties state of matter – physical form of a substance ex. solid, liquid, gas, plasma melting point – temperature a solid changes to a liquid boiling point – temperature a liquid changes to a gas malleable – can be hammered into sheets ductile – can be drawn into wires

Chapter 2.2 – Properties of Matter

Find the density of an object with a mass of 100 g and a volume of 25 cm 3. Find the mass of an object with density 0.50 g/mL and a volume of 200 mL.

Chapter 2.2 – Properties of Matter 2.chemical property – describe how a substance changes into a new substance either by combining with other elements or by breaking apart into new substances observing a chemical property changes what the substance is ex. flammability – ability to burn reactivity – capacity to combine with another substance to make a new substance
