The mass per unit volume of a substance. Density will always stay the same for a substance under normal conditions. What does the density of a substance tell a person? It will determine if the substance will float or sink in another substance. If a substance floats in another substance, it is less dense than the other substance. If a substance sinks in another substance, it is more dense than the other substance.

Formula- Density= mass volume d= m V

1) Which of the following is a physical property? A. CombustibilityB. Density C. ReactivityD. Corrosion 2) A piece of carbon has a mass of 14.0 g. The carbon is put into a beaker of water with a volume of 25 mL, and the volume of water goes up to 31.2 mL. What is the density of the carbon? 3) A unknown substance has a volume of 40.75 mL. Determine the mass of the substance if it has a density of 0.69 g/mL

4) A group of physical science students made some observations about a metal sample during lab. Shiny reddish-brown color Mass- 25.18 g Volume- 2.81 cm 3 The students were working with four metals. They included: Magnesium - density 1.74 g/cm 3 Aluminum - density 2.7 g/cm 3 Copper - density 8.96 g/cm 3 Silver - density 10.5 g/cm 3 What is the identity of the metal? A. MagnesiumC. Copper B. Aluminum D. Silver

5) Which of the substances is the least dense?

6. Which of the following is an example of a chemical change? A. An ice cube melting B. A person cooking an egg C. Cutting a box in half D. A metal conducting electricity 7. A ping pong ball will float in a tank full of water and a bouncy ball will sink in a tank full of water. Which one is denser? 8. A piece of metal has a density of 0.94 g/cm 3. Will the metal float or sink when put in a tank of water? (Water has a density of 1.00 g/cm 3.)

Law that states that mass/matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. It also states that the total mass of the reactants always equals the total mass of the products. This means that the left-hand side of the equation will be equal to the right-hand side of the equation. Ex: Burning a piece of wood

Chemical Formula- A shorthand way for identifying a compound using symbols that represents elements that make up the compound.

1. You are given a substance to do an experiment on. The volume of water and the substance in a graduated cylinder is 17.8 mL, and the volume of water in the cylinder is 10 mL. You find the mass of the substance to be 5.1 g. Find the density of the substance. 2. You are given 2 pieces of platinum. One is a tiny piece of platinum (Mass- 24.9 g, Volume- 1.17 cm 3 ) and the other piece of platinum is the size of a potato (Mass- 148.0 g, Volume- 6.95 cm 3 ). Does the density of platinum change?

3. Block X and Block Y have the same mass. Both blocks are placed into a container of pure water. Block X floats in water, and Block Y sinks to the bottom of the container. Which of the following statements is an accurate conclusion from this demonstration? A. Block Y is heavier than Block X. B. Block Y is less dense than Block X. C. Block Y has a smaller volume than Block X. D. Block Y would float if more water were added.

4. How many total atoms are in 4C 7 H 6 O 2 ? 5. How many Cu atoms are found in the reactants of the following equation? 2Cu 2 O + C  4Cu + CO 2 6. How many atoms of each element are found in the following chemical equation? CH 4 + 2O 2  CO 2 + 2H 2 O C-C- H-H- O-O- 7. Answer question Number 4 from the EOCT Study Guide.EOCT Study Guide

8. A student does an experiment on a sample of titanium. She found the mass of the sample of titanium was 47.6 grams and the volume of the sample was 10.5 mL. What is the density of the sample of titanium? 9. Condensation that occurs on a glass of tea left on the table is an example of a ______________________. (Physical Change or Chemical Change) 10. Why do the reactants of an equation always equal the products of an equation when a chemical reaction occurs.

For the following 5 chemical equations, list the type of chemical reaction that is taking place. (Synthesis, Decomposition, Single-Replacement, Double- Replacement) 1. C + 2F 2  CF 4 2. 2H 2 O  2H 2 + O 2 3. AlBr 3 + 3K  3KBr + Al 4. 4Al + 3O 2  2Al 2 O 3 5. 2NaF + SCl 2  SF 2 + 2NaCl

1) A graduated cylinder with water in it has a volume of 25 mL, and the volume of the graduated cylinder with water and a cube of ice in it has a volume of 28.9 mL. The mass of the cube of ice is 3.6 g. What is the density of the ice cube? Balance the following chemical equations and name what type of reaction is occurring. 2) ___N 2 + ____O 2  ____NO 2 3) ___Mg + ____CrO3  ____MgO + ____Cr 4) ___NH 3  ___N 2 + H 2

5) Grilling a steak is an example of a _________________. (Physical or Chemical Change) 6) How many total atoms are in 3CH 3 OH? C- H- O- Total- 7) Is any matter being created or destroyed when an apple is decaying? What law states why?
