3 2014 Summit Co-Convener:Founder: Healthcare Associated Infections Healthcare associated infections (HAI) are infections occurring after exposure to healthcare, often, but not always, as a consequence of this exposure. Includes –hospital-acquired (nosocomial) –nursing home-acquired –long-term care-associated –outpatient care-associated (e. g. dialysis, chemotherapy) –home care-associated infections

4 2014 Summit Co-Convener:Founder: HAI Global Burden In the United States: 1 in 20 patients 1.7 million HAIs 99,000 deaths Economic impact: $9.8 billion annually HAIs occur in all types of facilities Developing Countries: Limited data from low income countries Estimated prevalence: at least three times greater than United States Klevens et al Public Health Reports 2007 Allegranzi et al Lancet 2011 Zimlichman E, et al. 5 2014 Summit Co-Convener:Founder: Adherence to infection control guidelines is incomplete Many HAIs are preventable with current recommendations Failure to use proven interventions is unacceptable Only 30%-38% of U.S. hospitals are in full compliance Healthcare worker hand hygiene compliance hovers at just 40%
