Learning Objectives Discuss what confidence means and how it is a vital element in effective speaking. Recognize the realities of stage fright and how you can appropriately deal with the problem. Realize the value of perception as it applies to confidence in your speaking. Implement the planks of confidence in your speaking.

Understanding Stage Fright What is fear? Who gets frightened in front of an audience? When can you get scared? interviewing for a job meeting people for the first time answering questions in class speaking at a community function explaining a task to co-workers ??

Communication Breakdown Read Page 29 and answer the 2 questions. Turn in to top bucket when finished and grab "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" book.

Establishing an Accurate Perception Perception is how you (or other people) see things. An accurate perception is a tool that helps us learn about ourselves, our objectives, and other people.

Communication Breakthrough Read Page 32 and answer the questions.

Perception Perception of Audience Audience won’t see many of your nervous ticks, etc… Perception of the Speech Your audience sees you speaking as an opportunity for you to share your ideas, opinions, and facts. Speaking is not necessarily putting on a show. Don’t make the assignment more difficult than it needs to be.

Your Perception of Yourself Recognize self-worth and not fearing failure.

Student Work Page 45 Read excerpt as class. Reflect on the speech. Explain if you felt his rationale and using personal examples helped you better understand his point. Do you feel the same way that he feels? 10 sentences (2 paragraphs. )
