The Passion Week © John Stevenson, 2011
5
When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?” (Matthew 21:23).
6
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them. 46 When they sought to seize Him, they feared the people, because they considered Him to be a prophet. (Matthew 21:45-46).
7
Pharisees Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar? Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s Sadducees Question about a married widow There is no marriage in the resurrection Pharisees What is the great command of the Law? Love the Lord and love your neighbor
8
Matthew 22:41-42 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: 42 “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.”
9
Matthew 22:43-45 He said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying, 44 “The Lord said to My Lord, “Sit at My right hand, until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet”’? 45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” David’s Son
12
And He said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.” (Matthew 24:2).
13
And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him…” (Mark 14:13).
14
“…and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’” (Mark 14:14).
15
Mark 14:22 While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.”
16
Mark 14:23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
17
Mark 14:24-25 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
19
John 13:21-22 When Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking.
20
John 13:23-24 There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter gestured to him, and said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.”
21
John 13:25-26 He, leaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus then answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
22
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” (Matthew 26:36).
23
And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39).
24
First Prayer “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39). Second Prayer “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.” (Matthew 26:42).
25
John 18:3 Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
26
John 18:4-6 So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. 6 So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
27
John 18:4-6 So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. 6 So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
28
John 18:7-9 Therefore He again asked them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,” 9 to fulfill the word which He spoke, “Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.”
29
John 18:10-11 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”
