CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency How to put a lesson on a web site To work with a variety of people Create a lesson to be used in my classroom based on math standards. To network with people in my subject area. To use Excel Expectations

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency I learned the following: What not to do when uploading files Web page creation in Netscape Composer Linking pages and projects Power point Excel spreadsheets Downloading and uploading techniques Graphing with Excel Outcomes

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Successes High interest Students engaged Interest in topic Parent interest

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Successes Continued Meets standards Meets more than one standard

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Shortcomings Lack of computers in students’ homes. Limited class time. School server being down. Many students had to learn how to read a box score. Some students seemed uninterested in sports.

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Student Data Most students improved on their post tests. The scores on the projects were as expected. Very few students did not improve. These students either did not complete the assignments or their attendance was poor.

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Description and Timeline This is a pre-algebra lesson that deals with measures of central tendency. The students will surf the web in search of the true meaning of average. The lesson culminates in a project in which students demonstrate their mastery of the topic with the use of: graphs, arguments and predictions. This lesson takes anywhere from 3-6 days.

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency 1.0 Students know the definition of the notion of independent events and can use the rules for addition, multiplication, and complementation to solve for probabilities of particular events in finite sample spaces. 6.0 Students know the definitions of the mean, median, and mode of a distribution of data and can compute each in particular situations. 8.0 Students organize and describe distributions of data by using a bar graph Standards Addressed

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Overview of Activities Using the internet students find averages of their favorite baseball players. They must justify their salaries based on their averages. Students do a web search to define mean median and mode. Students find the mean, median and mode of the high temperatures for three cities for the past week. They then must use this data to construct a bar graph and predict the next days weather based on the newly acquired measures of central tendencies.

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Grading Pre/post Test Pre/Post Test grade based on the percent you answered correctly.

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Grading Rubric Portfolio grade based on the following rubric: 1 - Student completed few tasks. 2 - Student completed most of the tasks. 3 - Student completed all of the tasks. 4 - Student completed all of the tasks. Portfolio is neatly organized. 5 - Student completed all tasks. Portfolio is neatly organized. Student demonstrates a true understanding of mean, median and mode in their answer.

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Culminating Activity Rubric 3)Culminating Activity Grade based on the following rubric: 1 - Student completes few tasks. 2 - Student completes most of the tasks. 3 - Student completed all tasks. 4 - Student completed all tasks. Portfolio is neatly organized. 5 - Student completed all tasks and shows thought in justifying answers using mean, median or mode. Portfolio is neatly organized.

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Revisions After completing this project I would let students choose a sport to find the averages in. Many students had little interest in baseball. I changed some text in the web site and I’m still making changes to it. I haven’t found a need to revise the pre/post test.

CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology FINAL PRESENTATION Chris Fitch, West Valley High School Measures of Central Tendency Summary This project was both encouraging and discouraging. It was encouraging to see how technology can be used to enrich a students education and how that even I, a computer dummy, could take part in constructing something on the infamous World Wide Web. It was discouraging at times because of the things I learned the hard way. At times I was in the place of the student always in the need of help.
