Chapter 9 Review Trigonometry

Rules Take 3 minutes to silently complete the questions on your own. Take 2 minutes to agree on answers with your teammates. Share answers with teacher. With 20 minutes left, each team will shoot baskets. They get one shot per correct answer. The team with the most baskets earns extra credit on Friday’s test.

Core 1 Teams 1: Ethan, Cody, Peter, Jose 2: Ricky, Ben, Sam 3: Cheira, Sarah, Morgan 4: Hunter, Tanner, Steven 5: Antonio, Michael, Omar, Kyle 6: Katelyn, Lilibeth, Taylor 7: Abby, Emma, Josh

Core 2 Teams 1: Mitchell, Michael 2: Kashaun, Lucas 3: Tyler, Laura, Kristina 4: Desha, Janelle 5: Jeimy, Austin

Decide who is the shooter, manager, and writer. Shooter – shoots baskets at the end. Manager – makes sure everyone is on task; gets supplies. Writer – writes answers down to show to teacher

9-1 and 9-2: Sine, Cosine, and Tangent Find x. 1. sin17° = x/7 2. cosx° = 0.39 3. tan36° = 1/x

9-3: Angles of Depression and Elevation 4. A surveyor is 305 ft from the base of the new courthouse. Her angle measuring device is 5 ft above the ground. The angle of elevation to the top of the courthouse is 42°. Find the height of the courthouse to the nearest foot. 5. Twenty minutes after being launched, a hot-air balloon has risen to an altitude of 300 m. The pilot can still see the starting point on the ground at a 25° angle of depression. How many meters is the balloon from the starting point?

9-4: Vectors 6. Describe the vector using ordered pair notation. 7. Find the magnitude and direction of the vector. 22° 100 225 mi/h 450 mi/h

9-4: Vectors Find the sum of each pair of vectors. Give your answers in ordered pair notation. 8. 9.

9-5: Area Using Trigonometry Find the area of each polygon. Round your answers to the nearest tenth. 10. Regular pentagon with apothem 8 cm. 11. Regular quadrilateral with radius 2 m. 12. Triangle with the given dimensions: 15 ft 13 ft 65 °

13. A whale-watching tour leaves port and travels 12 mi directly north. The tour then travels 5 mi due east. a.In what direction should the boat head to return directly to port? (angle measurement and cardinal direction) b.How long will the return trip take if the boat averages 20 mi/h? (answer should be in hours) 14. In still air, the WP-3D flies at 375 mi/h. Suppose that a WP-3D flies due west and meets a hurricane wind blowing due south at 95 mi/h. What are the resultant speed and direction of the airplane to the nearest unit?

15. The world’s tallest unsupported flagpole is a 282-ft-tall steel pole in Surrey, British Columbia. The shortest shadow cast by the pole during the year is 137 ft long. To the nearest degree, what is the angle of elevation of the sun when the shortest shadow is cast? 16. A blimp is providing aerial television views of a football game. The television camera sights the stadium at 7° angle of depression. The blimp’s altitude is 400 m. What is the line-of- sight distance from the TV camera to the stadium, to the nearest hundred meters?

17. An engineer is 980 ft from the base of a fountain on Fountain Hills, Arizona. The angle of elevation to the top of the column of water is 29.7°. The surveyor’s angle measuring device is at the same level as the base of the fountain. a. Find the height of the column of water to the nearest foot. b. When the top of the column of water is just half as high as in part (a), find the angle of elevation to its top.
