Design and Research Mr. Badrul Azmi Abdul Holed School of Manufacturing Engineering Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) 21 st. July 2008 EPT322 INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
2
Lecture Topics What is Successful Design? Basic Product Development Process Descriptions of design Case Study and Project Analysis Learning Outcomes 1.Ability to remember and describe what is “successful design” means. 2.Ability to repeat and discuss the product development process and job/responsibility of Industrial Designers. 3.Ability to remember and discuss the important of research for industrial designers. The Product Development Process Design and Research The Product Development Process Design and Research
3
The Product Development Process Design and Research The Product Development Process Design and Research A “successful design” is highly dependant on a comprehensive research process as a ‘knowledge builder’ and ‘information gatherer’ about the subject domain.
4
1. Identify the "Bright Idea“/Opportunity 2. Define the Requirements 3. Gather Outside Information (Patent Search, Market Research) 4. The Design Phase 5. Prototyping 6. Production 7. Distribution and sales The Basic Product Development Process Design and Research The Basic Product Development Process Design and Research
5
The Basic Product Development Process Design and Research The Basic Product Development Process Design and Research Opportunity Identification and Selection Generate new products opportunities as spinouts of the ongoing business operation, new product suggestions, changes in marketing plan, resource changes, and new needs in the market place. -Marketing and sales personnel -Research and technology development organizations -Current product development teams -Manufacturing and operations organizations -Current or potential customers -Third parties such as suppliers, inventors and business partners
6
The Basic Product Development Process Design and Research The Basic Product Development Process Design and Research Phase 1 : Opportunity Identification and Selection Starting point of any design activities would be the establishment of user/market need in detail and depth. Research need to be done from various sources such as : - patents, trademarks, copyright laws - report, proceedings, reference books, trade information journals - report, proceedings, reference books, trade information journals - statistical data published - statistical data published The 6 area of information to determine the customer requirements : - who is the main customer - the customers’ needs and wants - how the customers can be group to form homogeneous market segments - what companies and products will compete directly & indirectly - how the requirements of communications will affect the nature of the product product - how the requirements of distribution and selling will affect the nature of the product the product S. Pugh, Total Design : Integrated Methods for Successful Product Engineering, 1991
7
The Product Development Process Design and Research The Product Development Process Design and Research A clear description of the problem you are going to solve. You may have to form the brief from either a situation or a theme. Before finalizing the brief you may need to do some “investigation”. Examples : PROBLEM : Toiletries Set for Hotel Seri Malaysia is not well presented and it’s looks very cheap but the hotel management don’t want to increase the cost. DESIGN BRIEF: Design a Toiletries Set for Hotel Seri Malaysia that looks expensive and well presented with the same cost.

The Product Development Process Design and Research The Product Development Process Design and Research Research into related topic Collection/compilation of useful information Analysis of topics Specifications - Visit shops or exhibitions to view current products. - Draw up a questionnaire to discover further information. - Interview people about the problem. - Visit libraries, read magazines and books to find further information. - Write to and/or visit industry to discover more information. - Take a similar existing products or systems & analyze it carefully. - Intellectual Property data which related to the product
9
The Product Development Process Design and Research The Product Development Process Design and Research Draw up specifications, which will helps to focus towards the key aspects of the problems. By having checked the key aspects, at least you will know the point has been considered. Examples of those aspects are : size function appearance cost safety environment manufacture ergonomic shape finishing maintenance The order and priority will change according to the design problem or the product nature or function.
10
Case Study and Project Analysis Design and Research Case Study and Project Analysis Design and Research Project Descriptions Improvement of “tensile test” equipment. Identified problem with existing product are: - Movement of the equipment. What I did?? 1. Asking questions. Movement frequency / rate of recurrence Who is the manufacturer and where and how it is going to produce Estimate Cost Looking at existing product and taking dimensions
