1 DEVELOPMENT OF A SPIRITUAL MIND
Romans 8:5-6

2 Introduction: Paul makes it clear that the sensuous minded person and the spiritually minded person are contrary to each other. He said that “the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish” (Gal. 5:17)

3 “For they that are after the flesh do
mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Rom. 8:5-6)

4 The blessings of life and peace do not
come mystically or haphazardly, but are given to those who are spiritually minded. Our objective in this lesson is to explore what is meant by the spiritual mind.

5 Spiritual Minded = Heavenly Minded
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3). The focus must be on “in heavenly” places” -- have a heaven-focused mind. Paul gave the Philippians a list of holy traits saying, “think on these things” (Phil. 4:8).

6 One who is risen with Christ will “seek
those things above…set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth” (Col. 3:1-2). Jesus taught that we are to “lay up treasures in heaven…not upon the earth…for where your treasure is there will your heart be also” which are not subject to moth, rust, or thieves (Mt. 6:19-21). Heaven is not a fleshly place (1 Cor. 15:50).

7 Humility is connected to obedience!
Spiritual Minded = Humbly Minded “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their’s is the kingdom of heaven” (Mt. 5:3). “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 2:5). What was the mind of Christ? Humility is connected to obedience! Phil. 2:6-8 Heb. 5:8-9

8 Refusal to obey is not humility,
but pride! There is no life or peace outside of humble obedience to the will of God! Spiritual Minded = Holy Minded “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (Heb. 12:14). In the judgment, “what manner of persons ought you to be” (2 Pet. 3:11-12).

9 Conclusion: As Christians, we are to be “partakers of the heavenly calling” (Heb. 3:1). This earthly life is not lived to satisfy the flesh, but to serve the Father. The spiritually minded man is always concerned with his soul and knows that sin will take his reward of heaven away from him.

10 “Man Carving His Own Destiny”
Put off: Anger Wrath Malice Blasphemy Filthy talk Lying Old man Fornication Evil desire Put on: Kindness Mercy Humility Meekness Patience Forgive Forbear Charity Thankful by Albin Polasek (Col. 3:8-15)

11 A man carved the likeness of an elephant
out of a huge unsightly boulder in his front yard. “I just chipped away everything that didn’t look like an elephant!”

12 the same image…by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:18).
“But we all…reflecting as a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image…by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:18). God’s word is the instrument by which He “operates” on us to change us (Col. 2:12).
