.southern.regional.drugs.task.force. Established under the National Drugs Strategy 2001 -2008 to work with communities who are experiencing issues of drug and alcohol misuse Now working under National Drugs Strategy 2009-2016

.main.points. No one person or organisation has all the answers to the issues caused by drug and alcohol misuse a broad range of responses are required and all agencies/communities need to play their part

.project.ethos. Projects are developed using a partnership approach with a strong commitment to local communities There are a large number of organisations, agencies and individuals involved in the development and running projects

.main.points..community.drugs.initiatives. Work with young people primarily, but not exclusively who are using drugs Referrals come from Gardai, Probation, Schools, Families, Community Groups Workers used evidence based techniques such as brief interventions, motivational interviewing and solution focussed therapy Cycle of Addiction – Pre-contemplation, contemplation, action, maintenance, relapse Projects are also developing supports for parents/concerned persons/families of young people who are using drugs.

.club.kerry.&.club.county.cork. Club Workers are employed within HSE Health Promotion Dept, to work alongside Vintners, Nightclubs, Gardai etc.. 2 courses are delivered by and a range of professionals: –Club Cork a 2 day course for publicans and –Smart Serve a one day course for off licence owners. Training courses have been delivered in Macroom, Mallow, Youghal, Bantry, Bandon, Dunmanway, Fermoy, Tralee, Killarney, Listowel, Dingle

.link.workers. Link Worker (x2) are employed within the HSE Drugs and Alcohol services to offer support to people who have presented for treatment and would have a wide range of other problems that may impact on their addiction. For example – providing support around housing needs, employment, training, social welfare etc...

.aftercare.projects. SRDTF is supporting Residential and Non- Residential Treatment centres in the region to employing workers to support individuals once they have left treatment services. This support is intended to avoid the occurrence of Relapse.

.strengthening.families.programme. Is a 14 week family skills training programme that is internationally recognised as having the most positive results in working with families with addiction There are approximately 100 individuals trained in Cork and Kerry to deliver the programme This programme has been run successfully in both Cork and Kerry, with approximately 70 families graduating

.small.grants.&.premises.fund SRDTF run a small grants programme (up to €4000) which is available to community groups, youth groups, student councils, parent associations, treatment centres etc… Grants have gone to, for example, –Listowel CBDI/CDP to pay for counselling hours –KDYS to run educational/diversionary programmes –Tabor Lodge to run an Education Programme –Youghal Foroige to run community training. –Cara Lodge to run a Summer Programme –Youth Café’s to purchase musical equipment and PA systems Application forms are available from the Task Force and the committee meets on a regular basis A National Premises Fund has also been available, which has allowed: Kerry Life Education to buy an Education Unit Listowel Drugs Initiative to build a new office for the drugs worker Tabor Lodge to build an Extension
