HIV/AIDS President’s First National HIV/AIDS Strategy (July 2010) (From the Executive Summary) A fellow citizen becomes infected every 9½ minutes. In almost 30 years epidemic has claimed more than 600,000 lives. We have the tools and knowledge to slow the spread of HIV and improve the lives of people living with HIV. Public’s sense of urgency appears to be declining.

16
HIV/AIDS and Province IV: States Three states in Province IV rank in the top 10 : Florida – 3 Georgia – 6 North Carolina - 10
17
HIV/AIDS Why is HIV/AIDS such a major problem in Province IV? Poverty Illiteracy Racism Homophobia Stigma
18
HIV/AIDS These factors combine to create the “perfect storm” that provides all that is needed for people to become infected with HIV/AIDS..
19
HIV/AIDS How do we prevent further infections? What do we do to educate our own parishioners and others about HIV infection?
20
HIV/AIDS The Baptismal Covenant Parameters for how we can teach HIV prevention Let’s see how that can work
21
HIV/AIDS There has been a 22 percent increase of HIV infections in young gay and bisexual men in the US from 2008 – 2010 Sixty (60) percent of young Americans living with HIV are NOT aware that they are infected. 36 million people worldwide have died from AIDS since 1981.
22
HIV and You(th) What young people need to know.
23
HIV and You(th) HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases or STD’s How you get them and how you don’t!
24
HIV and You(th) What is HIV? – Human Immunodeficiency Virus What is AIDS? – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome – Caused by HIV
25
HIV and You(th) Other STD’s: – Hepatitis C – Gonorrhea – Syphilis – HPV
26
HIV and You(th) How is HIV transmitted: – Mother to unborn child (decreasing in U.S.) – Contaminated blood/blood products (rare) – Contaminated needles IV drugs – including injected steroids Piercing needles – Unprotected sexual activity
27
HIV and You(th) How to avoid infection: – Do NOT share needles of any kind – Do NOT engage in unprotected sexual activity
28
HIV and You(th) How to avoid infection: I will NOT tell you to “just say no” to either drug use or sexual activity Hypocritical on my part – I have some understanding about teenagers and hormones!
29
HIV and You(th) Abstinence is best at your age and at this time in your life If you can not or will not abstain: Take Precautions! – All the time…..no exceptions!
30
HIV and You(th) “You will IF you love me!” Correct response is: – “If you DO love me, don’t pressure me!” And if the pressure continues, the next response is: – “Take a hike!”
31
HIV and You(th) Let me suggest a different approach: The vows we take at our own baptism and renew several times a year.
32
HIV and You(th) We promise: – To seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself – To respect the dignity of every human being Applicable to ALL relationships, whether sexual or non-sexual
33
HIV and You(th) Not telling you to “just say no.” Am telling you to consider these vows in reaching the decision that is right for you. You must make that decision: parents can not; friends can not; I can not…you must make it
34
HIV and You(th) Whatever you decide, remember: Abstinence is best at your age and at this time in your life If you can not or will not abstain: Take Precautions! – All the time…..no exceptions!
35
HIV and You(th) Also remember: There is no vaccine against HIV There is no cure for AIDS Medications treat symptoms and help make the condition manageable HIV disease is becoming a chronic condition instead of fatal
36
HIV and You(th) If you get infected: Can you (or your parents) afford the medical care? Can you (or your parents) afford the cost of the medicines you have to take to keep the virus under control? Can you afford HIV infection?
37
HIV and You(th) For someone infected with HIV: Cost of routine doctor visit is rarely less than a thousand dollars Specialized visits cost even more And then there is the cost of the medications
38
HIV and You(th) Here is a sample list of medications one living with HIV might be taking: Viread (one pill a day) Viramune (two pills a day) Ziagen (two pills a day) Acyclovir (three pills a day) Fluconazole (one pill a day as needed) Prevacid (two pills a day) Tricor (one pill a day) Omacor (four pills a day) Allopurinol (one pill a day) Clarinex (one pill a day) Lisinopril (one pill a day) Creon 12 (10 - 14 pills every meal) Lomotil (4 – 5 pills a day) Gabapentin (six pills a day) Glimepiride (one pill a day) Vitamin D (one pill a week) Calcium supplement (four pills a day)
39
HIV and You(th) Viread (one pill a day)$1236 Viramune (two pills a day)$1052 Ziagen (two pills a day)$1122 Acyclovir (three pills a day)$ 40 Fluconazole (one pill a day as needed)$ 12 Prevacid (two pills a day)$ 337 Tricor (one pill a day)$ 267 Omacor (four pills a day)$ 341 Allopurinol (one pill a day)$ 9 Clarinex (one pill a day)$ 260 Lisinopril (one pill a day)$ 6 Creon 12 (10 - 14 pills every meal)$2408 Lomotil (4 – 5 pills a day)$ 70 Gabapentin (six pills a day)$ 144 Glimepiride (one pill a day)$ 15 Vitamin D (one pill a week)$ 12 Calcium supplement (four pills a day)$ 12 90 day supply of each for a total of:$7343
40
HIV and You(th) The cost per year for medications: In excess of $25,000.00 (Twenty five thousand dollars) Can you afford it? Can your parents?
41
HIV and You(th) Consider the comparison: All the costs I outlined above OR Less than one dollar for one of these!
42
HIV and You(th) So tell me…..what choice will you make? Seek and serve Christ in ALL persons, loving your neighbor as yourself Respect the dignity of every human being
43
HIV and You(th) QUESTIONS?? COMMENTS?? THANK YOU!!
44
HIV/AIDS I have shared with you: Grim statistics about HIV/AIDS in Province IV How someone who is well educated, middle class, informed, and with good health insurance coverage and financial means copes with HIV.
45
HIV/AIDS What about those not so fortunate? What about those who will be most of the participants in the retreat that follows this Synod. What is living with HIV like for them?
46
HIV/AIDS My colleague, Lola Thomas, will provide you some of that perspective as: The Executive Director of an AIDS Service Provider An HIV/AIDS Educator The Chair of the Province IV Retreat Planning Team
47
HIV/AIDS Time for some questions and discussion First question for either of us or both?
48
HIV/AIDS Thank you for your time and your interest in what is a serious problem for us all.
