LEAD21 Unit 4: Seasons and Weather Week 3 Day 4

Extend the Theme Theme Question: How do weather and seasons affect our lives? Focus Question: How does severe weather affect us? What is the weather like in July? What season is this month part of? The poem for January is called “The Wolf Moon.” It is about wolves crying on a cold night. In our area, we don’t have wolves, but we do have cold weather and snow in January. When I think of weather and the seasons in January, I think of how quiet and still it is outside. I would call this the Still Moon.

Let’s extend our knowledge of the theme vocabulary words shadows and hidden by sorting related words. Sort the words into the correct column in the chart. 4 What does it mean to visualize? -Now let’s read aloud pages 26-27 and model visualizing. In the PoemPictures in My Mind The pond is black and icy; it must be cold. I picture how the beavers’ lodge is warm, dry, and safe. I can use the poem and the picture to visualize what it is like in November. The pond is black and icy, so it must be cold. Turn to pages 24-25. Why do you think the poet tells the hare to hush, beware, and take care? What do you visualize about the hare?

Use Text Evidence PagesQuestionText Evidence 10-15 How does spring weather affect plants, animals and people? 16-21 How do you think summer weather affects farmers? 22-29 How does cooler weather affect life from September through December? Pages 8 and 9: These pages tell me that snow falls and covers the Earth. I see in the picture that no one is outside. I’ll record this evidence: During the snow moon it is cold and snow covers the ground, so people stay inside.

Word Study: Review Syllabic Patterns When a word ends in a consonant plus –le, we divide the word into syllables so that the last syllable usually contains a consonant plus –le. For example: pud dleta ble When a two-syllable word has two different consonants in the middle, we divide the word between the consonants. For example: problemnapkin Draw a line to divide the word into syllables. pandawiggle windowstaple afterjungle enjoytitle

Fluency : “Pecos Bill” (phrasing) Practice Companion p. 252

Revise the Model It has a slide, swings, and Monkey Bars The slide is tall. When I’m on the swings, I can feel the chains and the plastic seat that bends when I sit on it. There is also a basketball kort. I don’t play basketball. People screaming and laughing, shoes making noise, and balls bouncing.

Edit the Model I like our playground at school. It has a slide, swings, and Monkey Bars. The slide is tall, curvy, and bright yellow. When I’m on the swings, I can feel the bumpy chains and the smooth plastic seat that bends when I sit on it. There is also a basketball kort. People screaming and laughing, shoes shuffling, and balls bouncing.
