Ethical Issues for Safety and Security Social Networking: Websites allowing people to connect with friends, family and colleagues online Facebook, MySpace, Google + Questionable people are these people who they say they are Privacy issues too much information being displayed

Digital Divide Gender Boys are more commonly found using technology Men are getting more IT jobs Girls are using sites more for communication and social media Women not seen as “tech savvy”

Digital Divide Socio Economic Equipment given to lower end economic schools but the knowledge of use is lacking Limited access of computers Many schools do not have enough computers or computer time Technology always changing More expensive technology, always evolving into new

What the teacher should do… Teachers should be aware of websites and what you can and cannot do with them Go over basic rules for staying safe online social networking sites such as what to post and what not to Make students aware of their privacy rights

What the teacher should do… Help other teachers out who may not know much about the policy Keep reminders around of things that should or shouldn’t happen Keep yourself safe, even if the school as a whole does not have a policy

What the teacher should do… Teachers should model when going online themselves Set up a contract for students about what to do or not to do on the internet Students can give examples of what they have done or seen others do. Discuss what is right or not.

What the teacher should do… Teaches can talk to students about bullying Contracts set up with guidelines No negative comments Reporting comments Talking to someone about what is going on Student journals kept Make parents aware of situations or websites for them to monitor

What the teacher should do… Teachers should be aware of laws and display them somewhere around student files as reminders Never give student information over an e-mail Make parents feel comfortable with the information they are giving Let them know you are aware of the laws

What the teacher should do… Teachers should talk to students about the websites they go on Is it safe or okay? Educate students about what they should post on the site When is it too much information Model for students certain websites and what it takes to sign up for them Do they really need to know this information to sign up?

What the teacher should do… Students should be the support beam in the classroom for ALL students Encourage technology for ALL students Broaden minds of students when thinking about gender appropriate studies Men can be teachers, women can be IT specialists

What the teacher should do… Teachers should incorporate technology into the lesson plans Either in teacher or assignments Make sure students get computer time during class time In class time is great way to help Teachers should be there to help students If they need help with assignment or with how to work programs

What the teacher should do… Teachers can allow ALL students internet access and computer use at school Allow students who do not have computers at home time to complete assignment

What the teacher should do… Make sure time is spent learning about the computer Internet, Word, PowerPoint, etc Computers should be available Before and after school hours Mental model technology in the classroom

What the teacher should do… Teachers need to keep an open mind on new students Create an even and fair classroom environment Plan getting to know activities Student and teacher learn more about each other

What the teacher should do… Teachers need to teach students about copyright laws Follow these in the classroom Talk about cases in which copyright was an issue Students decide which is okay and which is not Correctly siting sources and teacher students how to do this the correct way

What the teacher should do… Make sure that information used in the classroom is cited in the correct way Model for the students what can be used Teach students how to cite their sources in the correct manner When or when not to cite, proper way

What the teacher should do… Teachers should give examples to students of things that are public domain Go over the policies with students Students can come up with their own examples of public domain and what falls under all rights reserved Discuss why each one may be in each
