Good CyberCitizen Rules: Responsibility Responsibility of taking good care of ourselves and our computers – Not giving personal information online – Be alert for cyberpredators – Not to copy work from others without giving them credit when use their information – Keep the rules: provide citation and give credit What do you think would happen if we didn’t all obey any rules? – In your family – In a classroom – At our school – In our city – Our society – Answer: Someone could be hurt; we wouldn’t get any work done; chaos vs. orders Be RespectfulBe ResponsibleBe Safe

SAUSD’s Cyber Rules Similar to CyberSavvy Rules – Never share personal information or passwords because the Internet can collect and store all private information as public information – Cite your sources – Do not plagiarize – Get author’s permission before posting copyrighted materials Also, students are – To be responsible for the school computers – To respect the equipment and software provided on each computer – To respect and follow computer lab, classroom, and school rules. – No downloading of anything information to school computers – No installation of any copyrighted software to school computers – Not to connect personal technology equipment to the networks. Be RespectfulBe ResponsibleBe Safe Students shall use the Internet responsibly – Only for educational purposes – No posting of any illegal or unethical materials online – Personal information such as passwords, email, or computer files. (Passwords are private and should not be shared) Students shall never use the Internet as a tool to harass anyone. – Mean, unflattering, hurtful, or threatening emails, texts, or postings on social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook, etc. Students shall not post photos of others online without permission. What is CyberBully? A type of bully that happens online such as – Posting untrue statements about others online – Posting pictures of others without their permission online – Intentionally and repeatedly write unflattering and hurtful things about others online – Posting threatening statements to or about others – Or harass others though mean postings online If you experienced cyberbully, – It’s important not to respond to the bully – Tell an adult immediate – Do not delete the mean messages, but show them to adults as proof to protect yourself. – Written statements can be used as evidence to discipline and stop bullies. Examples of CyberBully Threats to harm another person Oral or written assaults, such as teasing or name-calling Social isolation or manipulation Posting harassing messages, direct threats, social cruelty or other harmful texts, sounds or images on the Internet, including social networking sites Posting or sharing false or defamatory information about another person Posting or sharing information about another person that is private Pretending to be another person on a social networking site or other electronic communication in order to damage that person’s reputation or friendships Posting or sharing photographs of other people without their permission Spreading hurtful or demeaning materials created by another person (i.e., forwarding offensive emails or text messages) and Retaliating against someone for complaining that they have been bullied. Advantage of Internet Internet is a great communication tool – Emails – Fast communication – Do you or anyone at home use the Internet for communication? Use Internet responsibly – Use good communication manners – Be polite and respectful just like when you speak Be RespectfulBe ResponsibleBe Safe

Netiquettes – Internet politeness or etiquette – Simple rules for writing email Be clear and concise Check your spelling Do not use capital letters – it’s like shouting at your readers Never say anything in an email you wouldn’t say in person Always avoid rude language Be RespectfulBe ResponsibleBe Safe
