5 November 21, 2002 - Stutts A Success Story  Allegheny School Science Education & Technology (ASSET) Inc.  Created/piloted by Bayer Corporation in 1992 to –Improve science education (key to Bayer success) –Increase global competitiveness –Develops critical-thinking, problem-solving and team building - all critical for a successful workplace  Spun off in 1993 as a 501(c)3 to –Obtain additional and sustained funding –Collaborate with NSF to add credibility –To partner with groups in the “business” of education  Now in 69 school districts in five counties

6 November 21, 2002 - Stutts A “Work in Progress”  Southwest Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste (SW PA HHW) Task Force  Members –Industry (Allegheny Energy, Bayer, ERM, PPG) –Non Profits (PA CleanWays, PA Resource Council) –Local Institutions (CMU and Pgh. Mercy Health System) –Gov’t. (ALCOSAN, Allegheny County Health Dept., Armstrong County, City of Pittsburgh, Green Tree Borough, PA DEP)

7 November 21, 2002 - Stutts SW PA HHW Task Force  Mission –Facilitate the proper collection and disposal of HHW and minimize its generation through education in SW PA.  Manageable tasks –Oversight –Funding –Location/disposal –Education and outreach  And sufficient volunteers to make progress

8 November 21, 2002 - Stutts Critical Success Factors  Catalysts need to exist –An event or events that provides the motivation –Individuals who have the energy and desire  Creation of a “win-win” situation  Active participation on both sides  Critical mass of participants to achieve the goal  Progress in a relatively short time period  Some mechanism for sustainability –Funding, people, PR, etc.

9 November 21, 2002 - Stutts Looking for That “Win-Win” Situation  Many companies look for opportunities to do good things  Individuals within companies may have a particular motivation to contribute  With increased competition for tax and charitable dollars and less staff to push activities, both sides need to see the return on their investment  Networks are important (you can’t get much done alone)  Even if a win-win situation doesn’t jump out, keep a dialogue going
