Think: What comes to your mind when you hear the name Abraham Lincoln? Today, I will be able to explain why the Republican party was founded. Outline Abraham Lincoln’s views on slavery and describe the different reactions of Americans to John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry. Yesterday, we took a quiz on 16.1/16.2 There will be a quiz on 16.3/16.4 on Friday.

Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854 (opens ‘Northern Territory’ to slavery…popular sovereignty) Bleeding Kansas ensues proving that bloodshed can and potentially will continue over the issue of slavery Republican Party is formed in 1854, against the expansion of slavery Dred Scott verdict 1857: States that all blacks free or enslaved are not citizens of the U.S. Moreover, it states all prior laws banning the spread of slavery are unconstitutional. Lincoln is elected in 1860 leading to the secession of almost a dozen Southern states.

Founded 20 March 1854: Party was made up of: Free Soilers, Democrats, antislavery Whigs, and some Know-Nothings. First candidate to run for President was John Fremont, leader and frontiersman from California. Goal: To stop the spread of slavery into newly acquired Western territories

Successful attorney from Illinois. Served four terms in the state legislature and one term as a U.S. Rep from IL Opposed the spread of slavery, thought if slavery wasn’t allowed to spread it would eventually die out. Main political opponent, Stephen Douglas (Lawyer and Senator) from IL

Lincoln runs against Stephen Douglas for U.S. Senator in 1858. They debated 7 different places throughout the state in 1858. They discussed popular sovereignty (Lincoln was against the expansion of slavery). Douglas believed that slavery should be allowed to spread where ppl want it. Lincoln doesn’t wish to interfere with the institution of slavery. HE IS NOT AN ABOLITIONIST Douglas will win and Lincoln is rather devastated.

He is an extreme abolitionist (believing you use violence to end the ‘evil’ institution). He and 18 men planned an assault on VA’s arsenal; he’s goal was to arm slaves and overthrow the institution of slavery. He and his men will be sentenced to death.
