Admission Average versus GPA in First Year University Associate Dean of Science has been looking at data for all first year programs in the Faculty of Science. When Admission Average is plotted against GPA in the First Year Program: – There is the least correlation (scatter plot) for programs with the fewest number of admission (course) requirements, e.g. Environmental & Earth Sciences I (ENG 4U, MHF4U or MCV4U, SBI4U or SCH4U, one of MCV4U, MHF4U, SBI4U, SCH4U, SPH4U) – There is almost perfect correlation for programs with the largest number of admission (course) requirements, e.g. Physical Sciences I (ENG 4U, MHF4U, MCV4U, SCH4U, SPH4U). The Department of Physics &Astronomy has been looking at similar data for Honours Physics (6-7 Level I course requirements for admission) and also finds near perfect correlation when admission GPA (at the end of Level I) is plotted against GPA at the end of Level 4. One might expect a similar result if we looked at data from Business I (ENG 4U, two of MHF4U, MCV4U, MDM4U) versus Engineering I (ENG 4U, MCV4U, SCH4U, SPH4U)

Looking Forward The Associate Deans of the Faculties of Science, Engineering, Business (and the equivalent for Nursing) have asked for data that will track students from Grade 11 all the way through Level 4 looking for indicators that correlate with student success (or failure). Math will be looked at very closely. If the goal is retention at the university level then guidance counselors in high school should give students the best possible advice in regards to Grade 12 courses even if students don’t appear to be listening, That is, if a course is required for your program in first year, make sure you take the corresponding 12U course. That means, if the level I program requires that you take a Level I Calculus course, then take MCV4U and if the level I program requires that you take a Level I Physics course, then take SPH4U even if they are not required for admission into the program. More math is always a good idea at both the high school and university levels.
