Vision EWB-USA’s outward vision is of a world where all people have access to adequate sanitation, safe drinking water, and the resources to meet their other self-identified engineering and economic development needs. Mission EWB-USA partners with developing communities to improve their quality of life through implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects, while developing internationally responsible engineering students. 3. A Little History Founder: Dr. Bernard Amadei Professor of Civil Engineering University of Colorado, Boulder 1 st project: –April, 2000 –San Pablo, Belize, a Mayan village of 250 people. –Designed and installed a water delivery system from river to village. Outcome: –May, 2001 –Project completed for $14,000 total –Civil engineers and students helped a developing community create a sustainable solution. –Children could attend school rather then haul water –EWB-USA was founded

4. Over 9,000 student and professional members Over 200 chapters 170 projects in 41 different countries Global Involvement (statistics Q1 2007)

EWB Hartford Professionals Chapter Founded in November 2006 by four United Technologies Corporation engineers, 1 architect and 1 nurse Currently ~ 20 active members and ~ 18 associates Backgrounds vary and include: –Civil & environmental engineers & scientists –Mechanical engineers, several registered Professional Engineers –Health professionals and EMTs –Several people with MBAs and project management experience Many members with international volunteer, travel & work experience –Nepal, Haiti, Poland, China

EWB-HPC’s Vision Our interpretation of EWB-USA’s vision is: –To help disadvantaged communities locally, nationally and internationally meet their basic needs through projects. –To have the Professional Members be a technical resource for students of all levels. –To collect and provide research on sustainable technologies to create internationally responsible engineers. –To maintain a presence in the local community through service. How are we achieving that vision? –By completing local, national and international engineering projects –By providing support to local CT educational initiatives, such as the Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program (CPEP) and local science fairs –By providing regular support to Hartford Habitat for Humanity –By reaching out to other areas of our nation and to other chapters to assist where needed –By supporting local college chapters of EWB –By providing technical presentations to our members at monthly meetings

8. What We’ve Been Up To Locally Our first Hartford Habitat for Humanity Day in June, 2007 A second Habitat day was held in September, 2007 Next Habitat day is scheduled for June 21, 2008

9. What We’ve Been Up To Nationally Trip to New Orleans to provide cleanup on the Algiers Masonic Lodge, July 07 - Gutted the 2 nd floor of this historic building to prepare for renovations - Provided additional cleanup work on the site as well

10. And Just a Little More! While in New Orleans, we picked up a project at Samuel J. Green Charter School to help out the New Orleans, LA EWB Chapter In 2007 we completed the design of a Rainwater catchment system In 2008 we will: Perform water quality testing Install a water purification system Design a solar water heating system Modify roof for cleaner water collection

11. Going International! Abheypur Village, India In January, 2008, EWB-HPC began a partnership with the University of Harford student EWB chapter to work on projects in Abheypur Village, India. Application submitted to EWB-USA. Approval expected in April, 2008. Implementation trip planned for late summer 2008, will: –Supply drinking water to a section of the village without access to clean water. –Rehabilitate three existing wells. –Make improvements to University of Hartford's previous project, a solar powered water supply. –Perform assessments for future projects.

Drilled a well Installed 1200 W of solar power Constructed a concrete foundation Installed four 500 gallon tanks

EWB-HPC Activities in 2008 February, 2008: –Presentation from University of Hartford students on India project –Professional chapter international project definition rework complete March, 2008: –International Project paperwork complete; planning begins –North-end of Hartford kickoff with CCSU April, 2008: –2 nd annual tag sale fundraiser April 26th May, 2008: –CPEP Day –CT Invention Convention June, 2008: –1st Habitat day June 21st August, 2008: –Sophomore design class mentoring at Univ. of Hartford begins –Abheypur, India implementation trip Fall, 2008: –2 nd annual EWB-HPC wine tasting fundraiser –2 nd annual Kleinfelder golf tournament to benefit EWB-HPC

15. How Can You Help? Attend our meetings! Become an EWB-USA member, associate yourself with the Hartford chapter –Complete on-line application from www.ewb-usa.org Donate money or resources; become a corporate sponsor –Donations are tax deductible; EWB-USA is a 501(c)(3) –Advertising/fundraising (host a fundraiser, donate posters, brochures, etc.) –Airline tickets, tools, supplies, etc. –Professional expertise (engineering, medical, health, advertising, accounting, fund raising, etc...) Host EWB hands-on workshops (i.e., wind power or solar power expertise) Suggest local projects –We’d like to be more visible in the Hartford area and help locally – if you know of a community who needs engineering/architectural/facility help, tell them about us!
