Rain Water Harvesting System & Management
4
Contents : DEFINITION PRINCIPLE USE OBJECTIVES PROCEDURE INVOLVED LOCATION OF STUDY
5
What is rain water harvesting ? It is the activity of direct collection of rain water and other activities aimed at harvesting surface and ground water. It is the activity of direct collection of rain water and other activities aimed at harvesting surface and ground water. It also includes prevention of losses through evaporation and seepage and all other hydrological and engineering interventions. Rain water can be stored for direct use or can be recharged into the ground water aquifer Rain water can be stored for direct use or can be recharged into the ground water aquifer

RAIN WATER HARVESTING?. RAIN WATER HARVESTING?. Rain Water Harvesting RWH- process of collecting, conveying & storing water from rainfall in an area – for beneficial use. Storage – in tanks, reservoirs, underground storage- groundwater
7
PRINCIPLE:
8
Why Rain water be harvested ? To conserve & augment the storage of ground water To reduce water table depletion To improve the quality of ground water To arrest sea water intrusion in coastal areas To avoid flood & water stagnation in urban areas
9
OBJECTIVES : Economics Reduces water bills Reduced water demand - water supply utility saves money on treatment and pumping Reduces cost of infrastructure necessary for water supply Environment Energy saved – no pumping of water to our homes If water is hard, adding soft rainwater improves water quality Improves groundwater situation Reduces demand for water at city/village level Other Simple, cost-effective, easy to construct and maintain Viable in urban and rural areas, slums, low income housing, apartments Can offset the need for multipurpose river projects
10
HOW? The concept is simple Collect Store and use Recharge
11
RAIN WATER HARVESTING Rain Roof Top Filtration or Recharge to ground water Storage Rooftop Water
12
Rainwater harvesting today Collection (Catchment) Flat / sloping roofs Leaf and grit filter, First flush device Transportation: Downtake pipes Storage in tanks Recharge into open wells / borewells / percolation pits / trenches
