3. 3 Trying to decide what Science to take next year? This presentation is meant to help you in 4 ways: 1.Choosing your courses, with ease and confidence. 2. Choosing, specifically, from the science courses that are available at Avon View High.

4. 4 3. Understanding what the various science courses are like. 4. Gaining knowledge about what sciences may be needed for specific training after high school. There are a few things to consider first….

5. 5 High School Graduation Requirements Nova Scotia 2006 -2007

6. 6 In order to graduate: You need a minimum of 18 credits (of which 13 are compulsory* meaning already picked for you. You have no choice with these ones.) But remember that: No more than 7 of the 18 credits may be Grade 10 level courses. At least 5 must be Grade 12 level courses.

7. 7 Here are the compulsory course categories from which you must choose. The first 13 courses must be selected from: A. 3 English credits: One at each grade level (10,11 and12) B. 1 Fine arts credit : Art, Drama or Music

8. 8 These maybe available in French as well as English. C. 1 Global studies (Global History or Global Geography) D. 2 half-credits: Physically Active Lifestyles (PAL) and Career and Life Management (CLM)

9. 9 Two Math and 2 Sciences are a minimum that everyone must take in order to pass. E. 2 Mathematics F. 2 Sciences ( one being Science 10) Chosen from: Science 10, Chemistry 11 and 12, Physics 11 and 12, Biology 11 and 12, Oceanography 11, Agricultural Science, Geology 12 Advanced Biology 12, Food Sciences 12

10. 10 2 more credits from technology, mathematics, or science: Technology courses include: Computer Related Studies 12, Communications Technology 12, Exploring Technology 10, Design 11, Applied Information Technology 11, Software Applications 12 or Film and Video 12, Electrotechnology 12

11. 11 Additional courses This category can include additional courses in Math Chemistry Physics Biology Oceanography Geology Agriculture, Food Science or Technology

12. 12 Think about this Here are more things to consider when selecting courses: 1. What do you think you will do after school? You may need to be flexible. 2. Will the next place accept these courses for entry to their program. 3. University science degrees (including nursing, kinesiology, pharmacy, physio etc.) require that you take sciences other than your major. Will you have background in these from you high school course selection?

13. 13 Summary Maximum of 7 from grade 10 Minimum of 5 from grade12 You pick the rest ( up to 24 but a minimum of 18 in total) from the choices that follow: But first, pick the compulsory ones.

14. 14 Cautions and Questions Are all courses equal and will all of them get you into what you want to get into? No Caution: There are 4 further categories for course selection that you have to keep in mind as you select courses..not all courses are equal.

15. 15 ‘Just want to get a job and have some money right away? A. GRADUATION COURSES These courses are designed for students who wish to obtain a graduation diploma and go straight to a paying job, rather than further studies. or some selected area of post-secondary study e.g. carpentry, electrical, roofing, welding, Cosmetology, aesthetics Examples: English/Communications 11 Math Foundations 10

16. 16 These are courses that universities will probably not be accept for credit. – Community Colleges probably will. ( You must check first) B. OPEN CATEGORY COURSES Although none of these courses meet the requirements of most “post-secondary institutions” (universities) individual courses may meet entrance requirements of some other institutions or courses of study. Examples: Accounting 11 Communications Technology 12

17. 17 Going to university ? Might go to university ? Then these are what you need: C. ACADEMIC COURSES These courses are designed for students who expect to enter university or other “post-secondary” institutions. Geography 10 English 11and 12, Advanced English 12 Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geology 12, Food Science, Agriculture PreCalculus, Calculus, Advance Math

18. 18 If you have a special interest or talent try … D. ADVANCED COURSES These courses are designed for students who have an exceptional degree of academic ability or achievement Or need to get very high marks in university so they need to learn as much as possible, now! Examples: : Advanced Chemistry 11 : Advanced Biology : Advanced English

19. 19 Before you pick all your courses think about this……. 1.Difficult courses should not always be avoided. 2.Should you really pick the same courses as your friends? 3.Do you really think you would use a “free period” wisely? 4.Minimum requirements may not prepare you for post secondary studies. Learn as much as you can now. 5.Most students take more than 18 courses. It is possible to take 24 in three years. You are here to learn.

20. 20 Think about the rest of your life, not tomorrow. 6)Will I, by not taking this course, possibly be limiting my future? 7)If I don’t know what I might end up doing in my life, shouldn’t I take a good selection of courses, just incase? 8)Does the cost of university scare you? 9)University costs about as much as most fully equipped SUV’s, and it lasts a lot longer !! 10) Just because you see a wonderful career on TV does not mean it is a paying proposition in NS….do your research. If your main concern is a good paying job, then make sure you are being realistic. Many exciting careers seen on TV require a doctorate degree, or a medical degree. Entrance to medical school is VERY competitive. ( i.e. requires very high marks and only a few get in each year.)

24. 24 Confused by terminology ( big words) ???

25. 25 What is a …...… ?? 1.What is a post secondary institution? A university or any other institution to which you would go after high school, it usually refers to a degree program. 2.What is a BA? - a three or four year degree in the arts, or social sciences usually. ( not science) Teachers have a BA or a BSc. and then a BEd. 3.What is a BSc.? - a science degree in Biology, Geology, Chemistry etc.

26. 26 What is an MA or Masters? - a post graduate (after a BA or BSc.) degree. It may take two to three years to complete. Marks must be good in the undergrad degree in order to get into a master’s program.

27. 27 Life Sciences and Physical Sciences Life Sciences- anatomy, biology, biochemistry, physiology, immunology, pathology, etc... Physical Sciences- astronomy, general chemistry, organic chemistry, geology, physical geography, etc...

28. 28 Social Sciences and Humanities Social Sciences- sociology, anthropology, psychology, geography, economics, political science, women's studies, international studies, etc... Humanities- art, literature, languages, philosophy, history, classical studies, religious studies, etc...
