21. English Creative Writing Program Northern Michigan University. A tiny program in the scenic UP that funds surprisingly well. It oughtn't be as obscure as it is. As with so many -- in fact, far too many -- MFA programs, NMU's website reveals little significant information about the program and thereby does it (and its applicants) no favors. 22. Faculty with national reputations John Smolens author of 5 novels in last 10 years. Stephen Burn recognized by NY Times Book Review as one of top 5 young book critics in the US. Matt Frank published fiction and non fiction in The New Republic, The Huffington Post, Field, Epoch, AGNI, The Best Food Writing, The Best Travel Writing, Gastronomica, and others. 5 students admitted to the MFA program out of 70+ applicants last year.
