3 Polytechnical Model The Polytechnical Model is intended to provide a foundation for community development, industrial retention and reindustrialization by inspiring and preparing the next generation of leaders in all aspects of advance manufacturing

4 Polytechnical Model Unlike traditional vocational education, which prepares student only for work on the shop floor, Polytechnical schools prepare students for leadership at all levels of advance Manufacturing –Skills production –Engineering –Management –Ownership –Intellectual Property (Law)

5 Polytechnical Model Our approach is premised on the knowledge that we must re-discover, Re-define and rebuild manufacturing if we are to advance a sustainable society Manufacturing is essential to building a broad base middle class

6 Polytechnical Model Manufacturing Renaissance (in conjunction with CMRC) developed the Austin Polytechnical Academy in Chicago The Model has three primary, interrelated aspects 1. Linkage to Manufacturing 2. Superior Academic Performance 3. A deep commitment to equity, access and development for all communities.

7 Polytechnical Model The Intention is to go Beyond the traditional Vocational/ Trade school model in terms of preparation and Post- academic opportunities Our objective is the give every graduate a choice (Dual Pathway) –Going to a four year university –Helping to sustain a family –Some combination

8 Austin Polytechnical Academy Small, selective enrollment, public high school College and Career Prep –Require Foundational competency –Require Technical competency –3-4 years of pre-engineering Project Lead the Way –Advanced machining for all students National Inst. For Metalworking Skill –Competency base Industry Credentials and Diploma

9 Austin Polytech’s Mission Prepare the next generation of leaders in all aspects of manufacturing—not a trade school! –Skilled production positions –Management –Ownership –Policy, intellectual property, research, and related fields

10 Partners for Austin Polytech Over 60 industry partners –companies, colleges, and universities Work experience opportunities –Plant tours –Industry credentials –Job shadowing –Internships and summer jobs –Career-track jobs

11 Rebuilding the Austin Community Exposure and Orientation to Manufacturing –Plant tours, career path concept, teacher education Career Readiness –Job shadows, internships, soft -skills training, hard-skills (NIMS) training Leadership Development (Capacity & Values) –Student-owned manufacturing business, Sustainability Leadership Club, SkillsUSA, patent law workshop Career Placement –Entry-level jobs explicitly connected to post-second education and career path, ongoing support & tracking

12 Rebuilding the Community Demonstrate that our economic recovery will be in communities most affected by the crisis Link youth and adults to high wage careers through education –Austin Manufacturing Training Center for adults – Post-secondary opportunities Austin Manufacturing Innovation Park Attracting, strengthening and starting companies clcr.org

13 The Polytechnical Model of Education Three Core Components: 1.Full alignment with the Advanced Manufacturing sector 2.Full institutional support from the public education to implement best practice in academic performance 3.Deep commitment to equity, access, and development for all communities

14 1. Alignment with the Advanced Manufacturing sector –Facility consistent with industry standards –Curriculum aligned with NIMS –Training for Instructors –Active Industry Advisory committee

15 1. Alignment with the Advanced Manufacturing sector Industry Coordinator –Creating a community of manufacturing Partners –Facilitating Partner connections to teachers and students –Pro-active weekly/monthly engagement with Partners

16 1. Alignment with the Advanced Manufacturing sector Youth Coordinator: –Get students and parents excited about manufacturing –Build community support: Inside/Outside game –Coordinate diversity of resources

17 2. Best practice in academic performance –An evidence-based method of remedial learning to advance students to grade level. –All Polytechnical students must complete college prep curriculum along with technical courses and work- based learning experiences

18 3. Commitment to equity and development for all communities –Opening training facilities during evenings and weekends for parents and community residents –Partner with local CBO to provide Bridge training –Austin Manufacturing Innovation District
