Wind Energy/Power By John Onukogu
2
Wind power Defined Briefly The use of wind generators to create electricity for either private or public energy consumption It is a completely clean, environmentally safe, renewable, energy source
3
First One Must Know Wind Wind is created when hot air rises, decreasing the atmospheric pressure near the Earth’s surface, which pulls in cooler air to replace it. That movement of air is called wind and it occurs because the solar radiation from the sun heats the Earth’s atmosphere at different amounts and speeds
4
How Does Energy Fit In The hot and cold movement of air produces kinetic energy—the energy created whenever mass is in motion Using the right technology the kinetic energy in wind can be converted into other forms of energy such as electricity
5
What Technology is Used The main and most important device that alternative energy people use is the Wind Turbine It consists of a large propeller blade, a generator/gearbox, and a tower holding them up
6
Define a Wind Turbine A machine used to harness energy by having a large vane wheel rotated by the wind to generate electricity.
7
The Process Incoming wind blows the propeller round, which turns the generator to produce electricity
8
Advantages Wind is free of cost and fuel is not required in wind farms The land below can still be used for farming Good way to supply energy to windy yet remote areas
9
More Advantages Wind energy produces no waste nor green house gases into the environment Using new technology wind can be harnessed more efficiently Wind farms are also able to be used as tourist attractions
10
Tourist Attraction Wind farm in Beer Creek, PA People can come there to see the farm
11
Disadvantages Wind turbines are noisy like a family car going 70 mph Wind is not constant. There can be days without wind The amount of wind available limits the locations where farms can be built
12
More Disadvantages People protest that wind farm land should not be messed with, yet should be natural Some people find wind farms to be unnecessarily big and unattractive Wind power currently needs to be more efficient
13
They’re Big Wind generators are colossal so they can get hit by lightning pretty easily
14
Geography of Wind Farms
15
Locations Areas with large wind speeds (electricity generated by wind speed cubed) Open farm land at the top of round hills
16
More Locations They can also be placed in open plains and in between the gaps of mountains A relatively new area to place wind turbines and generators are offshore coasts
17
History Farmers have always been using wind energy to pump water out of wells Windmills were the basis of wind power and it has been around for centuries
18
More History Windmills have been around since 200 BC in China Wind power is the fastest growing energy source and with power buildings for many years to come
19
Wind Industries AWEA (American Wind Energy Association) WWE (Western Wind Energy) You are not ready for the windmill
