Monday 9/20 Do Now 1.Find your new assigned seat 2.Take out your notebook 3.When Ms. Chan returns your “Questions and Variable” handout, find one of the staplers around the room and staple the handout into your notebook. 4.Take out a pencil.

Class Checklist  No students were talking during the review of the Do Now, during teaching time (note-taking) and during closing.  Every student was on time  Ms. Chan did not ask any student to put away their electronics (cellphones/IPODS)  No curse words were used inside this room.  Every student remained in his/her seat until independent practice.  By the time Ms. Chan goes over this list, every table has 2 chairs behind it.  All students followed the class rules. (Students did not argue with Ms. Chan)  Every student brought THEIR OWN pencil and paper to class.  Every student completed ALL of the class work for the day.  No student had his/her head down during class.  EVERY student turned in the homework ON-TIME.  It took Ms. Chan no more than 10 seconds to get the entire class’s full attention (eyes forward, mouths shut).

Review Do Now “Questions and Variables” Worksheet – Absent? See me after school for an extra copy. Go to: www.sayremschan.wikispaces.com. Click on “Notes and Homework”www.sayremschan.wikispaces.com – Excused Must have a note. – Unexcused You can make up the work, however, it will be marked LATE.

Agenda Notes on identifying variables (20 minutes) – Review Video – Real-life example IP: front page of worksheet (critiquing experimental design) – I will return Friday’s lab during this time. Discuss Homework procedure – Assign Homework Closing: Exit Questions

NOTE-TAKING REMINDERS … Everything that is BOLDED and UNDERLINED is important. That is “testable” info.

9/20 SCIENTIFIC METHOD -Observation -Question (testable!) -Hypothesis -A GUESS to ur Q b4 u do any experiments -Experiment -Procedures – series of steps u take to perform a task -Results -Conclusion

VARIABLES: something that can change in an experiment -Independent variable (IV) -YOU directly change this -The thing YOU are testing/messing with -Dependent variable (DV) -What u measure -What u are testing the IV on

CONTROLS Something that stays the same during an experiment/doesn’t undergo treatment Allows u to draw proper conclusions In the ideal experiment, you have 1 I.V. & multiple controls.

Review Video! Mr. Edmond’s Variable Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hxbz656E uyw&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hxbz656E uyw&feature=related

Guided Practice: Real-life application

NY Times article: “New Drugs Stir Debate on Rules of Clinical Trials” EXPERIMENTAL GROUP CONTROL GROUP

Independent Practice (10 pts) Complete the first page (back and front) of the worksheet. 15 minutes in: I will stamp your paper (if you have been working the ENTIRE time). Stamp = 7 pts. We will then review the worksheet (as time permits). Correct answers = 3 pts. Remember, you can work together. You will turn this packet in TOMORROW during independent practice.

Review IP 3) What is the relationship between eating breakfast and doing well in school? Hypothesis: If ______________, then _____________ If a student eats breakfast, he will do well in school. Independent Variable: Eating breakfast Dependent Variable: Grades (doing well in school) Control Group: Students who don’t eat breakfast & their grades

Review IP 5) Jim eats 5 small hot dogs in 5 minutes while Tom eats 5 steaks in 15 minutes. Therefore, Jim is a faster eater than Tom. Jim and Tom are both eating different types of foods.

Homework Procedure You come into class tomorrow and place your homework (these 2 pages) on your desk. I stamp your HW as you work on the Do Now. We will review the HW together. You will place it in the Assignment Box during or after Independent Practice.

Homework 1.Finish the Classwork if you haven’t done so already. 2.Complete the second page of the worksheet. If you run out of space, you may use another piece of paper to finish.

18 REMEMBER– DO NOT PLACE THE HANDOUT IN THE ASSIGNMENT BOX UNTIL TOMORROW.
