How are global patterns of development identified and measured?

3
What we think… One common view of development is that it can be measured economically – that increasing wealth or increasing levels of poverty are indicators of development.
4
Development is… Reducing levels of poverty Increasing levels of wealth
Reducing the gap between the richest and poorest members of society Creating equal status for men and women Creating justice, freedom of speech and political participation from everyone Ensuring everyone is safe from conflict and terrorism Ensuring everyone fulfils their basic needs – food water and shelter Ensuring that all children have good standards of education.
5
Human Development Index
Development is measured using the Human Development Index (HDI). The HDI is worked out by putting together 3 important pieces of information: Life expectancy Literacy Real GDP (Gross Domestic Product – is how much money earned)
6
Activity One 5 minutes In your own words, explain the term ‘development’. ACTUAL DEFINITION: Use of resources, natural and human, to achieve higher standards of living. Before it was based solely on economic factors, now it includes social measures and ideas such as freedom.
8
Activity Two 10 minutes Stick in your world map showing HDI.
Copy the question into your books beneath the map and answer. (4 marks) Describe the distribution of the highest and lowest countries according to the HDI index map.
9
The Brandt Line Public awareness of the development gap is not new.
It was first brought into the news headlines in the Brandt Report in 1980. This report by Willy Brandt, a German politician, drew a line on the map that separated the richer countries from the poorer ones.
10
DRAW THE BRANT LINE ONTO YOUR HDI MAP AND LABEL IT (ALSO ADD LABELS FROM THIS SLIDE)
11
The MEDC’s are situated mainly in the northern hemisphere.
The LEDC’s are situated in the southern hemisphere. The line loops around Australia and New Zealand to include them in the richer half of the map. Is this still accurate today?
13
What is Infant Mortality Rate and Life Expectancy?
Health data is also often used to describe a country’s level of development. Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is the number of children who die before the age of 1 for every 1000 that are born. Life expectancy is the average age to which people can expect to live.
14
What countries have the highest/lowest infant mortality?
What countries have the highest/lowest life expectancy?
15
Activity Three 25 minutes
Draw a scattergraph of this data putting IMR on the vertical axis and GDP on the horizontal axis. Describe the type of correlation shown. Stick the table and graph into your book. GDP per Capita (ppp)$ Infant Mortality (per thousand) Sierra Leone 1,040 144 Rwanda 1,600 92 Pakistan 3,300 72 Uganda 1,300 65 Kenya 1,400 62 Egypt 6,000 32 Brazil 9,500 30 Malaysia 10,000 18 Spain 25,500 6 UK 31,500 Australia 33,00
