2 extension.usu.edu What is 4-H? Experiential Learning – making meaning from direct experience 96% of youth who participate in 4-H go onto post-secondary education 4-H Science Mission: – One million new scientists. One million new ideas by 2013 in science, engineering and technology.

3 extension.usu.edu What do 4-H Clubs do? Each club has a primary focus for meeting – ours is Robotics These areas are built into a 4-H club: – Service – Citizenship – Leadership – Science – Club talks – Healthy living – Awards – Fair entries – Portfolios

4 extension.usu.edu Getting Started USU Extension Office will provide these items to get started: – Flags ($25) – Tables ($75) – Robot kits ($345) – Laptops, if needed ($500+) Clubs will need to fundraise to obtain their own supplies in the long run: – Merit badge clinics

5 extension.usu.edu Getting Started Meetings can be held at: – Homes – Churches – Community centers Cost of 4-H: $10 per year for membership/insurance

6 extension.usu.edu Meetings Clubs should meet at least once per month Usually from August – May (9-10 months a year) Elect Club Officers – Pres, VP, Secretary, Historian Start with the pledge Have a team building activity Learn the science

7 extension.usu.edu Challenge Nights Competitions once a month (or every other month) – Youth demonstrate what they’ve learned Placement challenge Sensor challenge Movement challenge – They progress in rank: Cadet, Captain, Commander – Receive awards – Earn the BSA Robotics merit badge

8 extension.usu.edu June 7, 2012 Regional Qualifier Event @ Sunrise Ridge Intermediate School 8am- 2pm Each team will need their own Robot for this event as well as the challenge kit.

9 extension.usu.edu Portfolios Youth organize what they learn in 4-H into a portfolio Portfolios track the learning of the youth – Worth over $20,000 in scholarships – Support positive youth development – Enter into Washington County Fair

10 extension.usu.edu Clubs Need Adult Leaders 1 Adult Leader is needed for each club 2-4 other Adult Leaders are needed for support and coordination meetings and events USU provides training and support for volunteer leaders
