3 NTSB Part 830 Applies to: Civil aircraft of the United States Certain Public aircraft Foreign civil aircraft where occurrence was in the US.

4 Part 830 Definitions Aircraft Accident- any occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight and all such persons having disembarked in which any person suffers death, serious injury, or in which the aircraft received substantial damage.

5 Definitions Civil Aircraft- any aircraft other than public Fatal Injury- Any injury which results in death within 30 days of the accident Incident- An occurrence other than an accident associated with the operation of an aircraft which affects or could affect the safety of operations. Operator- any person who causes or authorizes the operation of an aircraft

6 Definitions Ctn. Serious Injury- any injury which required hospitalization for more than 48 hours commencing within 7 days from the accident. Or any injury resulting in dthe fracture of any bone (except simple fractures of the fingers, toes, or nose). Involves any internal organ or involves 2 nd or 3 rd degree burns on more than 5% of body.

7 Definitions ctn. Substantial damage- Damage or failure which adversely affects the structural strength, performance, or flight characteristics of the aircraft.

8 Part 830 When is immediate NTSB notification required? –When an overdue aircraft is believed to have been involved in an accident.

9 NTSB Immediate Notification An aircraft accident or any of the following incidents occur: –Flight Control system malfunctions –Inability of any required flight crewmember to perform normal duties –Failure of the structural components of a turbine engine –Inflight fire OR aircraft collision in flight

10 Immediate Notification Ctn. Other property damage exceeding $25,000 For large aircraft (greater than 12,500 lbs.) –Electrical failure –Hydraulic system failure –Power loss on two or more engines –An emergency evacuation

11 Preservation of Material Preservation of the wreckage, contents, and records is the responsibility of the operator until released by the NTSB (the following exceptions apply): –To remove the injured or trapped –To protect wreckage from further damage –To protect the public

12 Preservation Ctn. When exact preservation is not possible due to the previous reasons, there shall be sketches, notes, and photographs provided Unless immediate notification is required, the operator has 10 days to file a report to the NTSB containing the items listed in NTSB part 830.6
