The Marriage Theory A married woman could not sue or be sued. Husband sued for her. Reaped the benefits. He controlled her wages.

Marriage Theory (continued) Lived where he wanted, by force if necessary. Had to cook, clean, have kids, raise them, and meet his sexual demands. Sole guardian of any children. He provided clothes, food, and a home.

Women of the Women’s Movement Betty Friedan – wrote The Feminine Mystique, encouraged women to fight against the male created stereotype. Encouraged women to fight for their rights. Helped to found N.O.W Lead the strike for equality on Aug. 26, 1970. The 50 th anniversary of the 19 th Amendment 500,000 women in NYC

The Women’s Movement Women were trying to gain equality and freedom. Today we have the same rights as men. Sexual Revolution Birth control pill Civil Rights movement National Organization for Women Student Non- Violent Coordinating Committee

The Women’s Movement Women in the SNCC were not taken seriously Were not allowed to make decisions Equally Beaten During Protests Letter was Laughed at Women of color were not as big in the women’s movement as they were in the civil =rights movement felt race before sex

Men’s Views on the movement "new and angry" male-hating freaks or a "small band of bra-less bubbleheads,“ Men were less than happy with the movement They saw women as trying to become the bread winners. They felt emasculated. Losing jobs and wives.
