3 LISTENING VS. ACTIVE LISTENING Listening To make an effort to hear something Process of hearing sound via vibrations hitting ear drum Paying attention to sounds Active Listening A way of listening and responding to improve understanding Intentional focus on hearing and understanding what a speaker is communicating Attention given to non- verbal attributes, context and tone

4 ACTIVE LISTENING TECHNIQUES Remove distractions Focus your attention (eye contact, key words, notes) Be prepared for subject to be discussed Be open – set aside judgments See, hear and feel the communication Let the presentation or argument run its course Respond to presenter (?s, lean forward, pay attention) Follow-Up ( ask ?s, make notes, reflection and apply knowledge

Readable Understandable – is it fact, thought or question Is the note your though or the speakers thought Focus on concepts not details – details can be filled in later

9 SCIENCE STUDY TECHNIQUES Terminology know Latin roots reduce large terms into smaller chunks Color code like root words Preparation read and review topic prior to class or lab review class notes within 1 hour and again after 8 hrs. Use multiple sources books, video, podcast etc. Ask questions in-class, office hours, classmates and others Visualize See the experiment or action in your mind – watch the re-runs Review and Reflect test, quizzes, questions, and errors you have made
