Fossil Fuel By: Ember Wu, Andrea S, Brenda S, Ana R.

There are 3 forms of fossil fuel; Coal, Oil and Natural Gas

Coal History, Pros & Cons

History of Coal Earliest known use was in China Found coal from the Fu-Shun mine May have been used to smelt copper as early as 3000 years ago In Middle Ages, coal was used for forges, smithies, lime-burners, and breweries when small mining operations started to spread throughout Europe.

Later half of 19th century, triggered the country's industrialization Became a major exporter of fossil fuel from a net importer of coal in just a few decades invention of fire bricks in the 1400s made a market for coal 1570s, coal was firmly established as the main fuel in most of Europe. First of the fossil fuels to go worldwide and was the leading fuel source in USA

Pros Very important for electricity(coal used for 50% of electricity) One of the cheapest ways to generate electricity Con s Produces most carbon dioxide Releases sulphur dioxide gas (breathing problems, acid rain) Strip mining destroys habitats

Oil History, Pros & Cons

History of Oil Formed more than 300 million years ago and have been ink use for more than 5000 -6000 years In ancient times, oil was easy to access (oil seeps on ground level) used as medicine 1850, Americans sold it in bottles to cure ailments August 27, 1859, Edwin L Drake found liquid oil at his well, near Titusville, Pennsylvania Drake found oil underground a way to pump it out of the surface Many oil wells were drilled afterwards

Pros We can use the fuel to power motors It is easier to get out of the ground than coal Boosts economy Con s Tanker ships can spill Releases sulphur dioxide gas(causes breathing problems and acid rain) Oil spills Disturbs habitats

Natural Gas History, Pros & Cons

History of Natural Gas 400BC- Chinese used it to boil water 100 AD- A Persian King built his kitchen around natural gas flame because it was struck by lightning 1700- British used for lightning 1800- used in North America for lighting 1821, William A Hart drilled a 27 foot deep well to try to get a larger flow of gas from a surface of natural gas = the first well intentionally drilled to get natural gas 1855, Robert Bunsen made and created Bunsen burner 1885-Used for Bunsen Burners

Pros Generates electricity Produces heat Can be liquified for easier transportation or converted back to gas Less pollution than coal Cleaner fossil fuel Less expensive to build a gas plant than coal plant Can be bottled up for car fuel Cons Very flammable Dangerous because you cannot see it or smell it Causes explosions or oil spills Disturbs oceans habitat

Companies Found in British Columbia Coal Mountain Elkview Line Creek Greenhills Fording River Brule Perry Wolverine Coal Mines : Roman Mountain Trend Mine Quinsam Coal Mine Oil Refineries: Burnaby Oil Refinery Prince George Oil Refinery Natural Gas: Montney Formation Precision Drilling Corp. Calfrac Well Service Trican We'll Service Ltd. Spectra Energy FortisBC

How The Power Is Generated fossil fuel: burn chemical fuel -the heat the is produced by fuel is used to boil water, to make steam -the steam spins a turbine then, it drives a generator which produces energy - the energy goes to the transformers to create the right voltage

Cost of Fossil Fuel Fossil fuel is 9 cents/kWh It might raise since fossil fuel is running out since it's a non-renewable energy it might run out sooner or later.
