R ECYCLING In conjunction with our membership, CDA Africa will compile a pictorial aid for “Guidelines and Specifications for Non-Ferrous Raw Material.” The completed product will be available in both printed and electronic format. The objective is to assist SARS with identification for import and export purposes.

L IBRARY P ROJECT At the beginning of March 2011 CDA Africa embarked upon a project to capture the contents of all ICA/CDA and ‘ of interest’ publications in electronic format. The objective is to allow members access to the wealth of information that is available on copper. The publications will be listed on the website. Electronic versions will be stored on the CDA Africa server and will be available on request.

P RIMARY E DUCATION A project to develop the CDA Africa website specifically targeted at primary level students has been awarded. The objective is to make the website more user- friendly and informative to young people with a view to educating them on the varied uses and benefits of Copper and its Alloys.

A NTIMICROBIAL C OPPER Three, two and a half minute, short stories have been commissioned. (LittleBigStories) The first will be aimed at health professionals and will cover the death of microbes on copper surfaces. Professor Shaheen Mehtar will feature with her work carried out at the rural clinic in Grabouw. The remaining two stories will be targeted at the insurance companies / medical aids and the health facility providers. All three will be suitable for use throughout the copper value chain. CDA Africa will be represented at the annual IPCAN conference which will be held in Namibia this year. Guest speakers will include Prof Mehtar and Prof Bill Keevil from Southampton University. CDA Africa was represented at the biennial conference of South African Federation of Hospital Engineers in April and is creating a mailing list of the delegates and exhibitors. CDA Africa was represented at the African Health conference held at Nasrec in May and distributed Antimicrobial Copper leaflets to the delegates.

M ARINE A QUACULTURE Advance Africa has been awarded the project for Aquaculture. The project will enable the mariculture fraternity to make future farming decisions based on results obtained from local conditions. DBSA has been contacted with a view to partnering with interested parties in the SADC region.

A RCHITECTURE A complete data base and mailing list of all architects in South Africa has been captured. The list encompasses all 9 provinces and 1277 professionals, including:- Medical and Healthcare Conservation and Restoration Hospitality and Leisure Community-based Housing Town Planning Education Mining Commercial Residential Public Utilities

H EAT E XCHANGE A data base and mailing list for South Africa has been created with a total of 622 companies, including:- Radiator Manufacturers Air-conditioning and Refrigeration participants Heat Exchanger Manufacturers Heat Pump Manufacturers

A FRICAN I NCUBATOR The move towards plastic plumbing tube and components prompted CDA Africa, together with one of its members, to facilitate a Train-the- Trainer Program which complies with City & Guilds requirements. Education to use copper as a first choice in plumbing and solar installations is the objective. The first course sponsored by Johannesburg Water was completed at the end of April. The second course, sponsored by Eskom, starts at the beginning of June 2011.
