The female reproduction system matures at puberty and enables women to reproduce.

Objectives Students will be able to explain the purpose of the female reproductive system after reading about, viewing a power point presentation, taking a post test. Students will be able to draw, label some parts of the female reproductive system and color the female reproductive system. Students will be given a short quiz on the female reproductive system.

Big Idea The organs of the female reproductive system enable pregnancy to occur with the first monthly ovulation.

Female Reproductive Organs Egg female gametes or ova (singular—ovum) Fallopian Tubes a pair of tubes with fingerlike projections that draw in the ovum. Ovaries the female sex glands that store the ova and produce female sex hormone. Uterus the hallow, muscular, pear-shaped organ that nourishes and protects a fertilized ovum until birth. Vagina a muscular, elastic passageway that extends from the uterus to the outside of the body. Cervix The opening to the uterus, and into the vagina.

Menstruation Means: The shedding of the uterine lining. Sanitary pads or tampons to absorb the blood flow. Begin first menstrual cycle between the ages of 10 and 15. Maybe irregular. Endocrine hormones control the cycle. Continues until from puberty until menopause which usually occurs between the ages of 45-55.

Maintaining Reproductive Health Big Idea Good hygiene, breast self-exams, and abstinence from sexual activity help female reproductive system. Bathe regularly Have regular medical exams Practice abstinence Perform breast self-exams once a month right after menstrual period.

Infertility and Other Disorders Has several causes: Endometriosis: Occurs when uterine tissues grows in the Ovaries Fallopian tubes or the lining of the pelvic cavity

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Spread through sexual contact Untreated STDs/STIs such as: Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are associated w/ pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) May cause infertility Abstinence from sexually activity until marriage is the only way to avoid STDs/STIs

Ovarian Cysts Fluid filled sacs on the ovaries Small noncancerous cysts may disappear on their own Larger cysts may have to be removed surgically.
